ADORATION DES MAGES.

A droite du tableau est un bâtiment à demi ruiné, sur le devant duquel se trouve la Vierge assise, tenant sur ses genoux l'enfant Jésus , tandis que saint Joseph est debout auprès d'elle; de l'autre côté sont les trois Mages de l'Orient, tous trois à genoux. Celui du milieu tient une bourse , probablement remplie d'or. A gauche est un homme debout enveloppé dans un manteau et tenant son bonnet à la main. Cette figure est certainement un portrait, mais on ignore le nom du personnage.

Ce beau tableau est un des plus précieux ouvrages de Jean Van Eyck. Peint avec soin , toutes les têtes ont une expression douce et naïve, les caractères en sont très - variés , le fini de tout l'ouvrage ne nuit en rien à l'eflet du tableau , qui est un des plus remarquables de ceux réunis en si grand nombre dans le palais de Schleissem , appartenant au roi de Bavière.

Une gravure de ce tableau a été faite à Munich en 1823, par M. Charles-Ernest Heiss.

ADORATION OF THE MAGI.

On the right of the picture is a building half in ruins , before which the Virgin is discovered sitting, and holding the infant Jesus on her lap, whilst Saint Joseph is standing near ber; on the opposite side are the three Eastern Magi all kneeling, whilst the middle one holds a purse probably filled with gold. On the left is seen a man standing envelopped in a cloak, and holding his cap in his hand; this figure is certainly a portrait, but it is not known of whom.

This fine painting is one of the most precious works of Jean Van Eyck ; executed with care, all the heads have an expression both simple and sweet , the characters are varied in it, and the finishing of the whole work is not deficient in any respect , as to the effect of the picture, which forms one of the most remarkable of those collected in such great profusion at of Schleissem , a palace belonging to the King of Bavaria.
