SIR: I have the honor to present herewith the Annual Catalogue of the University of Missouri, reviewing in part the work of the current session and outlining so far as possible the programme for the scholastic year of 1905-6.

RESIGNATIONS, APPOINTMENTS, AND PROMOTIONS.

AT COLUMBIA: Since our last Report of March, 1904, there have been the following resignations, appointments, and promotions in the various departments:

Law Department. The increased enrollment in this Department made it necessary to appoint, on September, 1904, an additional Professor of Law. Our choice fell upon Mr. W. W. Cook, formerly of the University of Nebraska. By the appointment of this Professor the University was enabled to dispense with the services of Mr. H. D. Murry and Mr. Milton R. Conley, of Columbia, who had served as Assistants during the session 1903-4. Mr. J. E. Nugent is serving this year as Clerk of the Practice Court.

Medical Department. At the expiration of the term of service of Dr. C. M. Sneed, who was Assistant in Bacteriology and Pathology for the session of 1903-4, Dr. W. S. Carhart was elected Instructor in these subjects. Dr. Eugenia Metzger, Assistant in Physiology, having resigned, Mr. O. R. Gullion, formerly Assistant in Anatomy, was appointed her successor. Dr. C. M. Jackson returned last August from a year's furlough, spent in study in Europe. Dr. E. T. Bell, who had charge of his work during his absence, was on 1 September, 1904, made Instructor in Anatomy. Messrs. C. C. DuBois and W. H. Goodson are acting as Assistants in this work during the present session. Dr. C. A. Good, House Surgeon of Parker Memorial Hospital, and Dr. T. E. Moore, the first Graduate Interne, having resigned their positions during the summer of 1904, these places have been filled by the election of two of our graduates, Dr. A. J. Campbell and Dr. H. Haas, as Internes. Dr. A. W. McAlester now gives his entire time to his work as Dean of the Medical Department and Superirtendent of Parker Memorial Hospital. Miss Sophie L. Evans, Head Nurse at the Hospital, resigned her position last summer. This position

was filled temporarily by Miss Alice Sipple and finally by the election of Miss Josephine Shields, whose term of service began about the middle of October, 1904.

Teachers College. Instead of the Department of Education, a sort of appendage to the Academic Department, a Teachers College, co-ordinate in rank with those of Agriculture, Engineering, etc., has been established. Dr. A. Ross Hill, Professor of Educational Psychology, is now Dean of the Teachers College. For the position of Professor of History and Principles of Education the choice of the Curators fell upon Dr. Frank P. Graves. For the Chair of Theory and Practice of Teaching, Dr. J. L. Meriam was selected with the rank of Assistant Professor. Mr. J. D. Elliff, a graduate of the University, has been appointed Inspector of High Schools and Instructor in School Administration. Assistant Professor W. B. Elkin, who taught in the Department of Education during the session of 1903-4, has been retained for this session in the service of the University. In the Teachers College Mr. Wilbur F. Starr has been appointed Instructor in Vocal Music. Mr. Starr takes charge of the music at the Daily Assembly also and trains the Glee Clubs.

College of Agriculture. Since our last Report Mr. M. W. Harper has been elected to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. E. L. Shaw, Assistant in Agriculture. Mr. C. R. Crosby has been elected Assistant in Entomology to fill the position of Mr. George J. Reeves, who resigned in September, 1904. Dr. J. B. Tiffany was elected Instructor in Veterinary Science in September, 1904, taking the place of Dr. R. J. Foster, resigned. Dr. Tiffany's title during the present session, owing to the absence of Dr. John W. Connaway on a furlough in Europe, is Acting Assistant Professor (in charge) of Veterinary Science. To fill the place made vacant by the resignation of Dr. G. M. Tucker, Instructor in Agronomy, Mr. M. F. Miller of the Ohio State University was chosen, with the title of Professor. The Dean of the College of Agriculture, Professor H. J. Waters, was absent last session on furlough to take charge of the Agricultural Exhibit at the World's Fair. Mr. Waters' furlough has been extended one year longer in order that he may study in Europe. During his absence at the Fair and in Europe Professor F. B. Mumford has been acting as Dean of the College and Director of the Experiment Station. Mr. C. H. Eckles, Assistant Professor of Dairy Husbandry, has been given a furlough, which he is spending abroad in study. His substitute for the present session is Mr. R. M. Washburn.

College of Engineering. Mr. H. B. Shaw, Professor of Electrical Engineering, has been appointed Junior Dean of Engineering. This appointment seemed advisable on account of the large enrollment of stu

dents in this Department. Mr. L. C. Nicholson, Instructor in Electrical Engineering, resigned his position in the summer of 1904, and Mr. Alan E. Flowers has been appointed in his place. Mr. J. H. Wallace, Instructor in Mechanical Engineering, having resigned his position in the fall of 1904 on account of ill health, the Curators appointed with the same title Mr. A. F. Van Deinse. For the second semester of the current session Mr. L. M. Fry has been appointed Assistant in Surveying. Mr. A. C. Duncan has been retained during the present session as Instructor in Shopwork. Mr. M. S. Bowen was appointed Assistant in the same subject at the opening of the scholastic year of 1904-5. The unexpectedly large enrollment in Shopwork necessitated the appointment of a student Assistant for the first semester of 1904-5, Mr. A. W. Spaht. The leave of absence granted last year to Mr. T. J. Rodhouse, Instructor in Mechanical Drawing was extended, on account of ill health, to cover the present scholastic year. He has an exceptionally fine opportunity to pursue advanced study. During his absence Mr. W. B. Rollins is Acting Instructor, assisted by Mr. E. F. Robinson and Mr. Omer Denny.

Academic Department. The University sustained a great loss in the resignation of Dr. Frank Thilly, Professor of Philosophy, who left us last summer to accept a chair at Princeton. His successor has not yet been appointed. During the present session Dr. W. B. Elkin has charge of the work of Philosophy. The large enrollment in Mathematics has made it necessary to appoint an Assistant Professor in this subject. Dr. G. A. Bliss has been elected to this position. During the present session Mr. Louis Ingold, Miss Mary Shore Walker, and Miss E. E. Dobbin are Assistants in Mathematics. Mr. A. C. Lyon, Assistant in Chemist:y, resigned his position last summer. His place has been filled by the election of Mr. E. E. Morlan. During the current scholastic year Mr. F. W. Liepsner is Student Assistant in Chemistry. Dr. Raymond Weeks, Professor of Romance Languages, has been granted a year's leave of absence, which he is spending in study in Paris. Dr. C. S. Brown is his substitute. In the place of Assistant Professor R. E. Bassett, whose resignation was noted in the Catalogue of last session, Dr. John T. Clark, of Harvard University, has been elected, with the title of Assistant Professor in Romance Languages. Miss Ellen Douglas, assistant in this work last session, is with us no longer. Dr. J. C. Jones, who was absent last year for study in Germany, has returned and resumed his duties as Professor of Latin and Dean of the Academic Department. Miss Eva Johnston, Assistant Professor of Latin, has been granted a furlough for the present session, which she is spending in study abroad. Dr. E. H. Sturtevant is her substitute. Mr. L. G.
