of these facts on the question of the surface application of manure, or burying it beneath the surface, will be evident to the reader, at once. EXPERIMENTS ON TEMPERATURES OF SOIL AS AFFECTED BY CHEMICAL CONSTITUTION. These experimental investigations consisted of a series of observations, by means of thermometers placed in the soils, and the observations taken thrice daily, from the 1st of May to the 30th of September. The soils used were tile clay taken from the subsoil; sand, such as is used for making mortar, and freed from all foreign matter, by washing; tile clay and 12 per cent. humus; sand and 12 per cent. humus, and humus. Each kind of soil was placed in a separate box; the several boxes being separated by hollow walls to prevent the lateral communication of heat. The thermometer bulbs were buried two inches deep in each soil, and the stems projected horizontally from the side of the box, so that the temperature could readily be read from the thermometer scale. The observations were taken at 7 a. M., 2 P. M., and 9 p. m. These observations and the results, are contained in the following table: 18 Means,. 50.77 72.03 55.90 51.97 71.74 60.03 51.80 71.22 59.64 51.00 70.03 58.77 51.54 73.58 56.30 52.19 67.32 52.74 1 70.03 Average, 59.57 61.25 60.89 59.94 59.57 57.42 82 63 82 66 60 80 68 60 90 94 72 92 75 89 74 88 71 68 94 76 96 74 63 92 76 66 88 ཤྩ ཊྛུ སྒྱུ 62 83 70 74 ཎྜ ཌ ༔ ⌘ 2 8 2 3 4 8 64 57 55 57 80 63 51 77 བ་ 76 67 94 68 71 87 888 67 64 54 58 60 59 56 62 62 70 70 62.47 82.90 67.00 62.67 83.63 69.77 63.33 85.67 70.63 61.90 83.37 70.01 63.03 83.97 €5.67 62.93 77.57 61.43 70.79 72.02 73.21 71.79 70.89 67.31 |
