Could I prevail on you to take that course which leads to everlasting life, I would conclude by entreating you frequently to consider your latter end, to lay to heart our blessed Lord's well-known solemn

question, "What shall it profit a man though he gain the whole world and lose his own soul? what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" If you would give heed to the text, you must endeavour to think, and speak, and act as in the immediate presence of God, and labour to bring every thought and desire into obedience to his will. Try, then, my brethren, to watch and pray against sin and temptation on all occasions. Labour to increase in that faith which purifies the heart, works by love, and overcomes the world. Endeavour to fill up your several and respective stations in life to the credit of the gospel, and to the glory of God; ever looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, and of every good and perfect gift, for all the assistance and grace necessary to carry you on even unto the

end. This is what the Lord commands

you to do, and this is what this is what you have to do, as the great business of this life. This is what, through the grace already given, you can do; and this is that very way of occupying with your present entrusted talent, which will bring down on you the promises of the gospel in the supplies of more grace, mercy, and peace now, and in finally bringing you into the full possession of eternal life in the kingdom of heaven, through the merits, sacrifice, and intercession of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

"Jesu, my Saviour, Brother, Friend,
On whom I cast my every care;
On whom for all things I depend,
Inspire, and then accept my prayer.

“ If I have tasted of thy grace,
The grace that sure salvation brings,
If with me now thy Spirit stays,
And hovering, hides me in his wings;

“Still let him with my weakness stay,
Nor for a moment's space depart ;
Evil and danger turn away,

And keep till he renews my heart.

"When to the right or left I stray, His voice behind me may I hear;

'Return, and walk in Christ thy way; Fly back to Christ, for sin is near.'

Oh reach me out thy gracious hand!
Only on thee for help I call;
Only by faith in thee I stand."

SERMON XXIV.

THE FINAL JUDGMENT.

HEBREWS IX. 27.

"It is appointed unto all men once to die, but after this the

judgment."

II CORINTHIANS V. 10.

"For we must all appear before the judgment-seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."

THERE is a day coming which is to be such as none ever were before; the last day, the day of the Lord, the day of final and universal judgment of men and angels, of quick and dead. Concerning this day, its nature, and its consequences, many things are written in the Scriptures of God, all of which we shall each and all of us have to witness and to be partakers of, either for our everlasting joy, or to our unspeakable misery. Let us, then, turn our attention to such parts of this

solemn and all-important subject as our present time will admit: and may the Holy Spirit render our consideration of them effectual to the divine glory and to each of our soul's good.

First, The day of judgment is to be the day in which the Lord will call each and every soul to an account of all their thoughts, words, and actions, of all the dispositions and desires of the heart; whether they were good or bad, all will then be laid open. No rank, or riches, or station will shelter any one; the rich and the poor must stand together; for there the Lord will be no respecter of persons. It is only on earth that these distinctions are permitted; at the judgment seat of Christ they will vanish for ever. The Lord will prove himself to be a righteous Lord, a God of justice and truth and all men shall receive according to the things done in the body, and not according to what the world has thought or said concerning them. The judgment passed on every soul will be a righteous, an impartial, an unerring
