knew no set terms in which to express his fatisfaction, but he preffed me eagerly in

his arms.

His comrades overcome with fhame and regret, with fupplicating faces feemed to afk forgiveness. In few words I endeavoured to confole them, enjoying this whole fcene too much to interrupt the contemplation of it by idle fpeeches useless reproach.

From this time I experienced the fatisfaction of being beloved without any mixture of interest. Klaas was now my equal, my brother, the confidant of my hopes and fears; more than once has he calmed my agitated mind, and re-animated my drooping courage; if in the sequel he may fhew fome marks of weaknefs, inconfiftent with

the good order I had established in my camp, the proofs of his attachment had too much weight to permit the exertion of severity, or offering any impediments to the interests of his heart.

I did not forget to draw a faithful refemblance of this worthy Hottentot, from which the annexed plate was engraved.
