This book establishes the first systematic basis for studying European approaches to crisis management in the 1980s. The studies in this volume trace three episodes in the West European approaches to crisis management in the early to mid 1980s, with a particular emphasis on foreign policy coordination between France, West Germany and the United Kingdom, and on transatlantic cooperation via the US-EPC "Political Dialogue". The central question addressed is to what extent did the major European powers coordinate their foreign policies, and how did this affect Europe's ability to influence American policy in the selected three cases: the Polish crisis 1980-82, the Grenada crisis 1983, and the Libya crisis 1986.
