THE INTERNATIONAL STEAM ENGINEER

CHICAGO, ILL.. AUGUST 15, 1916

No. 2

Newark the Convention City

This issue of the JOURNAL will be the last one to reach the membership before the coming convention.

The Fifth Biennial convention of the International Union of Steam and Operating Engineers will be held at Krue--ger Hall, Newark, N. J., commencing Monday, September 11th, 1916.

Judging by the number of credentials already forwarded to headquarters, the coming convention will be the largest gathering of representatives of the I. U. S. & O. E. ever held. It is fitting that this should be so, as many of the most important questions affecting the engineer's calling will be disposed of at this convention.

The Union Engineers of Newark are making every effort to make this coming convention a success. They have succeeded in securing very reasonable rates for the delegates at the Newark hotels, and have also made provision for their entertainment while in their city.

The Continental Hotel has been selected as convention headquarters, and the following letter, addressed to Brother Henry Hebeler, Business Agent of Local Union No. 68, will show that the management of this hotel has not only made very reasonable rates for rooms, but that he intends to make every reasonable effort to have the delegates entertained and cared for in every way at his hotel.

July 10th, 1916.

MR. HENRY HEBELER,
Bus. Mgr. Engineers Local No. 68,
240 Springfield Ave., Newark, N. J.

Or $1.00 per day for each occupant. The above rates may be a little confusing to you at first sight, but it will be necessary for us to make use of the majority of our bath rooms if we are to take care of more than (100) of your people, therefore we will put in what we have to at the regular rate, it being understood that the bath rooms will have to be occupied by two or more people, as we could not let them out at the rates quoted for single people.

As I have already explained to you we will make a further concession to you, by allowing the Convention people to be checked off for Luncheon, provided they are registered on the American Plan and notify us before leaving in the morning, that they will not be at the Hotel for Luncheon. This will allow 50c on their bill for the Luncheons that they miss.
