The Council met.

PHILADELPHIA, Thursday, September 21st, 1786.

Colonel Francis Johnson was directed to advertise a further sale of city lots numbered from one thousand nine hundred and ninetyfour, to two thousand one hundred and forty-four, inclusively, adjoining and near the Center Square, to be held on Saturday the seventh day of October next, at the old Coffee House.

An order was drawn upon the Treasurer in favor of the Honorable Peter Muhlenberg, Esquire, for sixteen pounds ten shillings, in full for twenty-two days attendance in Council, between the 25th of August and 21st of September, 1786, the last day included.

A letter from John Wilkins, Esquire, praying leave to resign his office of Lieutenant of the county of Cumberland, was read, and his resignation accepted.

Monday next was assigned for going into the appointment of a Lieutenant of the said county of Cumberland, in the room of Mr. Wilkins.

A letter from John Pierce, Esquire, of the seventh instant, inclosing sundry receipts signed by the Agents of the Pennsylvania line, for one million three hundred and two thousand five hundred and sixty four dollars and fifty-four ninetieths of a dollar, in certificates for the arrears due the Pennsylvania line, was read.

The Council met.

An order was drawn upon the Treasurer in favor of James Pearson, for one hundred pounds, in part for repairing the State House, for which sum he is to account.

A certificate of the division of the township of Pitt, in the county of Westmoreland, by the Court of Quarter Sessions of the Peace held at Hanna's Town, for the county aforesaid, on the second Tuesday in January last, was read, and an order taken that the division be confirmed, agreeably to the decree of the said Court.

The Council met.

The following orders were drawn upon the Treasurer, vizt:

In favor of the Honorable Samuel Dean, for fifteen pounds, and the Honorable Jonathan Hoge for twenty-nine pounds ten shillings, in full for their attendance in Council respectively, until this day included, and the mileage of the latter.

The petition of the Earl of Shelburne, by his Attorney Timothy Hurst, stating his claim to sundry city lots and lands in this State, in right of the original purchase of Sir William Petty from William Penn, the first Proprietor of Pennsylvania, was read, and referred to the Surveyor General to examine the records of his office, and report thereon.

Agreeably to the minute of the 21st instant, Council proceeded to the appointment of a Lieutenant of the county of Cumberland, in the room of John Wilkins, Esquire, resigned; and the votes being taken, it appeared that George Gibson, Esquire, was duly appointed to that office.

Upon the petitions of Edward Fox and Abraham Shoemaker, and recommendations accompanying the same, it was

Ordered, That the said Edward Fox and Abraham Shoemaker be appointed and commissionated Notarys Public for this Commonwealth.

PHILADELPHIA, Tuesday, September 26th, 1786.

The following orders were drawn upon the Treasurer, vizt:

In favor of the Honorable Thomas McKean, Esquire, for two hundred and fifty pounds, for one quarter's salary as Chief Justice, ending the 25th instant.

In favor of the Honorable George Bryan, Esquire, for one hundred and fifty pounds, for one quarter's salary as one of the Justices of the Supreme Court, ending the 25th instant.

In favor of the Honorable Jacob Rush, Esquire, for one hundred and fifty pounds, for one quarter's salary as one of the Judges of the Supreme Court, ending the 18th instant, according to the Comptroller General's reports.

In favor of the Honorable Isaac Meason, for thirty-eight pounds five shillings, in full for his attendance in Council until this day, inclusively, and his mileage.

The Council met.

PHILADELPHIA, Wednesday, September 27th, 1786.

John Carothers, Esquire, was appointed and commissionated a Justice of the Peace for the district of West Pennsborough township, in the county of Cumberland, upon a return made according to law. Mr. Carothers was also appointed and commissionated a Justice of the Court of Common Pleas for the county aforesaid.

An order was drawn upon the Treasurer in favor of Peter Burkholder, for one hundred and fifty-two pounds, being the ballance due to him in specie, upon a settlement of his account as late SubLieutenant of the county of Northampton, according to the Comptroller General's report.

The fine imposed upon Darby McMimary, upon conviction of larceny, in the county of Philadelphia, was remitted.

The Council met.

PHILADELPHIA, Thursday, September 28th, 1786.

Ordered That the sale of William Hay's estate, by the Sheriff of the county of Lancaster, be postponed until the further order of Council.

An order was drawn upon the Treasurer in favor of James Pearson, for one hundred pounds, in part of his account for repairing the State House, for which sum he is to account.

Council having received information of a robbery being committed upon several friendly Indians, at or near Tioga, by a certain John Hogg and some people that were with him, in the month of August last, it was

Ordered, That the sum of twelve pounds specie be put into the hands of Samuel Dale, Esquire, who was instructed to proceed to Tioga, and pay the same to such Indians as have been robbed, to reimburse them for the articles taken from them; and an order was drawn upon the Treasurer accordingly.

Copies of the law for erecting the northern part of the county of Northumberland into a separate county, were delivered to Mr. Dale, with instructions to distribute the same, for the information of people residing within the new county.

The fines imposed upon John Conrad Latour and John Speckert, upon conviction of a cheat, in the county of Philadelphia, were remitted.

PHILADELPHIA, Friday, September 29th, 1786.

PRESENT:

Ordered, That Alexander Lowry, Jacob Cook und Joseph Work, Esquires, be and they are hereby appointed Commissioners for the purpose of disposing of the estate of William Hay, of Dauphin county, late Collector of Excise for Lancaster county, and they or any two of them, to contract for the whole, or divided, and let the payments be such as will best answer the interest of the State.

Ordered, That the Sheriff of the county of Lancaster be authorized and directed to execute a deed or deeds to any person or persons the Commissioners aforesaid may sell the said estate to, in the same manner as if sold by himself.

A return of the distance from the Canoe Place, on Susquehanna, to the Kittanning, on the Allegany river, together with the boundaries of the several districts of James Potter, James Johnston, James Hamilton, George Woods, Junior, and Thomas Brown MeLene, as surveyed and laid down by Robert Galbraith, Esquire, in pursuance of an order of Council dated the 8th of April last, was presented to Council; which being read and considered, an order was taken that the same be confirmed.
