understand they have come short of this by about $400,-$200 on their general list, and $200 on their orchard premiums. I understand that a committee from the Pomological Society will be present at this meeting, and present to you a full report of their work and condition. As it has been very strongly urged by many prominent men of our State that the State Agricultural Society ought to relieve them of this embarrassment, I feel it my duty to present the matter for your earnest consideration; and should you determine to afford them this small measure of relief asked for, I have no hesitancy in saying that it will meet the approbation of nearly all the members of the State Agricultural Society, as well as almost every citizen of your State. I trust, gentlemen, you will carefully consider this matter, and do justice to this society as well as your own.

Gentlemen, a little over two years hence is to be held, in the city of Philadelphia, the great centennial exhibition. Every State is expected to contribute of its products to that exhibition, therefore would it not be well for you to consider at this meeting what course your society will take in this matter. The Legislature of your State has as yet taken no action, and perhaps it would be well for you to appoint a committee at this time to confer with the Legislature at its next session, which may take place before you have an opportunity of considering this question again. I think it highly proper that the State Agricultural Society should have a voice in this matter. I regard the time as very short now to collect and prepare for exhibition samples of all our various products.

On motion of Mr. Baxter, Col. Geo. S. Wormer of Detroit was elected a member of the executive committee to fill vacancy caused by the election of Mr. Kipp to the presidency of the society.

On motion of Mr. Wells, a committee consisting of four was appointed to confer with the Pomological committee in reference to appropriation of money for that society, and to confer upon the subject of a joint exhibition for 1874. The President appointed the following committee:

H. G. Wells, Edwin Phelps, D. W. Howard, and D. Wolverton.
On motion, adjourned to 9 o'clock A. M. Wednesday. Approved.

C. F. KIMBALL, Secretary.

Wednesday Morning, Dec. 17.

Called to order by President Kipp. Roll called: quorum present. Minutes of yesterday's proceedings read and approved. Mr. Wells, from the committee to confer with the Pomological committee, reported as follows:

The undersigned report that we recommend the appropriation to the Michigan State Pomological Society of $1,000 to pay their indebtedness. That we further recommend that the premiums to be offered by the State Pomological Society for the year 1874, together with the expense of said society incident to the exhibition for said year, shall be paid by the State Agricultural Society of Michigan. The amount of said premiums to be agreed upon by the two societies.

(Signed)

On motion of Mr. Phelps, report was accepted.

It was moved and adopted that the vote upon appropriation for Pomological Society be by ballot.

On motion of Mr. Hanford, which was adopted, the question was divided and the vote was first taken upon the appropriation of $1,000 to pay past expenses, with the following result: 17 yeas, 7 nays.

The portion of the report relating to the future was laid upon the table. Mr. Baxter offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That the society invite the State Pomological Society to exhibit with us at our next annual fair, and that, in case of acceptance on their part, that we authorize the payment of premiums, to be agreed upon in connection with our society, to an amount not to exceed the sum of $1,500, and that we will pay expenses of said society to be incurred in connection with the holding of such exhibition, printing of premium list, awards, etc., and all other expenses, to an amount not to exceed in the aggregate $500, all printing to be done under the direction of and paid for by this society, which, on motion, was laid on the table.

A memorial from R. F. Johnstone was read by the Secretary in regard to balance due him as Secretary in 1867, 1868, 1869, 1870, 1871, 1872, as follows, which, on motion, was referred to a special committee, consisting of Messrs. Greene, Wells, and Hyde:

EATON RAPIDs, Mich., Dec. 17, 1873.

To the President and Executive Committee of the Michigan State Agricultural Society:
The undersigned respectfully represents:

First. That at the annual meeting of the Michigan State Agricultural Society, held on the fair grounds at Detroit, in the month of September, 1867, a resolution was offered by Austin Wales, a member of the society, and passed unanimously, ordering the executive committee to pay the Secretary a salary of $1,200 per year, and fixing the salary at that rate; and also that there was a resolution passed that the Secretary, for that year's services, should be paid $600 in addition to his then salary, which was, and had been for many years, $600. That these resolutions were entered on the records of the society.

Second. That on account of the financial position of the society the said Secretary was never paid more than $1,000 per year, and that of the $600 ordered paid for the services of 1867 he was paid only $200, and that there is lawfully due the said Secretary at the present time the balance accruing each year of $1,200 for the years 1868, 1869, 1870, 1871, 1872, and also $400 for 1867.

Third. The undersigned also respectfully directs the attention of the executive committee to the clause in the constitution which says in Article VI. that the executive committee "shall itself obey the instructions which shall be given to it at the annual meeting of the society," and that he now presents this claim, as he is advised that it is a good and lawful demand, and at the same time just and equitable. He therefore asks that the amounts due him on this account may be now ordered paid, as the finances of the society will now permit it so to do without detriment to its interests.

R. F. JOHNSTONE.

Mr. Allison presented the subject of the location of the next fair, stating that Saginaw would respond the same as last year if the fair was to be located at East Saginaw.

Mr. Green moved that the subject of location be referred to a special committee of three, with instructions to report this evening. Adopted.

And Messrs. Green, Griggs, and Sterling were appointed such committee. Superintendent Wolverton, from the committee on perfecting cattle awards of late fair, reported in favor of paying awards of viewing committee in Division A, Class 5, Alderneys and Galloways.

Report received and adopted.

On motion of Secretary Kimball, the following resolutions of thanks were adopted:

Resolved, That the thanks of this society are due and are hereby tendered to the Smithsonian Institute at Washington for valuable foreign reports upon agriculture and kindred topics, furnished this society by that institution, which will aid us very materially in spreading knowledge of agriculture, fruit growing, and stock-raising in the State of Michigan. Resolved further, That we hereby tender our thanks to the secretaries of the boards of agriculture in the States of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Nebraska for printed reports of proceedings of said boards.

The committee appointed to examine and report upon the memorial of R. F. Johnstone submitted an adverse report which was accepted and adopted, and is as follows:

To the Executive Committee of the State Agricultural Society:

GENTS:-Your committee to whom was referred the claim of R. F. Johnstone, beg leave respectfully to report. They have availed themselves of such testimony as was within their reach, having called before them Messrs. Beckwith, Sterling, Hanford, and Humphrey. They find that at a meeting of the Agricultural Society in 1867 a recommendation was made to pay the Secretary of the Society $1,200 00 per year.

At same time a resolution was passed by which $200 00 extra pay for past services was paid to Mr. Johnstone, as noted in his account presented; but at the annual meeting of the Executive Committee in January following, the salary was fixed at $1,000 00 per year. In view of the above facts, your committee do not feel at liberty to recommend the payment of any further amounts to Mr. Johnstone. All of which is respectfully submitted. H. G. WELLS, C. W. GREENE, A. O. HYDE,

Committee.

Mr. Hanford, from committee to perfect premium awards, reported, perfecting discretionary awards in classes 29, 31, 48, 49, and 50, which was adopted, and ordered spread upon the class registers.

NOTE TO EXHIBITORS.-The exhibitor shall be required to exhibit a pedigree of the animal competing, and the winner of the premiums must file with the Secretary a copy of the pedigree of the animal which was the successful competitor. Where all other points are equal, the committee is to be guided by the condition of the animal and its superior fitness for breeding purposes. The pedigree must show descent on both sides from imported stock. Directness of descent and an acknowledged celebrity of ancestry to rule in the comparison of pedigree. Quality of animal and fitness for breeding, with justness of proportion, to be considered next after establishing purity of blood. This rule applies to all the improved breeds of cattle.

The entry of young stock in the appropriate section does not preclude them being shown with their sire or dam.
