sently smite us for it; but how often are we remiss and negligent in the duty, and feel not the reproof? It may be we take some care in the matters of our own souls, but what do we for our families, our friends, and acquaintance? it may be we dare not conform to evil men nor have fellowship with them in evil ways, but do we not connive at them? we do not render evil for evil, railing for railing; but do we good for evil? do we pity and pray for them, and labour by all means to gain upon their hearts? It may be we dare not be unrighteous, or unjust in our dealings, but are we not unmerciful, unpeaceable, unquiet? we dare not lie, nor swear, but are we so watchful as we should be against idle and vain talkings, frothy and unsavoury discourse? we cannot suffer any root of malice to abide in our hearts, but are there not many sudden and furious fits of anger breaking forth with much bitter and reproachful language? are we not fretful and impatient, without laying it much to heart? doth conscience check us for, and make resistance against every evil? O that our consciences were universally tenderour pride will not bear any thing that reflects upon our reputation, our covetousness will not bear any thing that is a hindrance to our gains, our passions scarcely bear the least

cross or unpleasing word.

O if conscience

were in every thing as tender, what Christians should we be! Let us then press on with so much earnestness after this evenness and consistent walk, that it may be seen, that however we have not yet attained, yet we are following after, though we have not reached to, yet we are reaching towards it: Let us be gentle, flexible, easy to be entreated, so fearful to offend, so ready to please all men in all things which are not against conscience, its peace and purity, that we may convince them that in those things wherein we are fixed and do not yield, it is because we cannot, not because we will not. Let us sincerely tender.

And may this at last be our rejoicing, the testimony of our conscience, that with simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world. Amen.

HYMN.

Awake my soul, the sun is risen,
With a new day to dress for heaven;
Put off thy sins in every deed,

And shine an Israelite in deed.

Let all thy converse be sincere,
Thy conscience as the noon-day clear,
Think how th' all seeing God, thy ways,
And all thy secret thoughts surveys.

Redeem thy misspent time that's past,
And live this day as if thy last
Improve thy talents, take due care,
For the great day thyself prepare.

Great God, control, suggest this day,
All I design, or do, or say;

That all my powers, with all their might,
On thy sole glory may unite.

PRAYER

For Tuesday Morning.

Almighty and most merciful Father, whose ears are ever open to the souls that seek thee in sincerity and truth, dispose us ever to direct our prayer unto thee and to look up; and daily at thy footstool to wait for thy blessing, for thou art a God of compassion and gracious, long-suffering, and plenteous in goodness and truth.

In thee we live, and move, and have our being. It is thou, our heavenly Father, who hast protected us luring the past night, and

hast brought us to meet together in health and peace, the living monuments of thy sparing mercy, and providential care.

But thou hast done for us greater things than these, which call for our gratitude and praise. Thou hast sent thy only Son into the world to redeem us from sin and everlasting death. Our souls bless thee, O Lord, and all that is within us bless thy holy name; we will bless thee at all times: thy praise shall be ever in our mouths, we will magnify thee with the voice of thanksgiving, and exalt thy name together.

But thou requirest us to glorify thee not only with our lips, but in our lives. Help us and so dispose us this day to serve thee faithfully, in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom,but with thy grace, and thy spirit. Grant that every morning may find our hearts more enlarged to run the way of thy commandments. May it become more and more the earnest desire of our souls, and the great business of our lives, to work out our own salvation, with fear and trembling; and do thou, Almighty God, continu~ ally work in us both to will and to do of thy good pleasure. Let our conversation be daily in heaven, and our whole behaviour such as becometh holiness. May we be jealous over our hearts, and daily keep them with

all diligence, remembering that out of them are the issues of life. Enable us, O God, to set a watch about our mouths, and to keep the door of our lips, that no communication may proceed out of them, but that which is good for the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Save us from that fear of man which bringeth a snare :—while we are willing to become all things to all men for their spiritual good, keep us from making shipwreck of faith and a good conscience. Finally, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, may we think of these things and have grace to perform them; and grant, O Lord, that we may shew ourselves partakers of thy grace, by holding the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end. We look up unto thee, thou compassionate High Priest, who alone art able to keep us from falling, and who art touched with the feeling of our infirmities, to carry on in our souls, from day to day, the work of faith with power. Fill us with the knowledge of thy will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Strengthen us with all might according to thy glorious power,. that we may walk worthy of thee unto all
