At London, fuddenly, George Biggin, Efq. a very great fcholar, and poffeffed of diftinguished talents. His mind was particularly directed towards fcientific purfuns, and he was probably the best gentleman chemift in this country. By his various knowledge, gentlemanly manners, and high talents, he had railed himself into the firi, connections. He was one of the earlicit friends of the late Duke of Bedford, and the intimacy continued unimpaited till the death of that Nobleman. Mr Biggin, many years ago, afcended with Lunardi and Mrs Sage. He was about 43 years of age. He feemed to poffefs a conflitution that promifed his friends long enjoyment of his knowledge and virtues.

It is a popular tradition, that the Scottish officers, who rofe to great nilitary employments under that nonarch, were, in general, mere oldiers of fortune, men low-born nd illiterate.

THIS, however, like many other Popular traditions, is erroneous. There may have been fome Scottish fficers in the fervice of Guftavus Adolphus, who, through extraorlinary merit, attained to high rank vithout the aid of birth or of a lieral education; but most of them vere gentlemen, and bred up as entlemen ought to be.

liam Baillie, and many others in the fervice of Sweden, is well known: The heroic houfe of Lindefay fupplied Guftavus Adolphus with numerous officers: Sir Alexander Hamilton, General of Artillery, was the brother of the Earl of Hadinton; and, to the advantage of birth, Sir Robert Monro and Sir John Hepburn joined the more important advantages of academical ftudy in foreign parts as well as at home.

I have not been able to procure any authentic accounts of the fa mily of Sir James Ramfay. It is probable, however, that he was a fcholar; for of him a German poet thus fpeaks:

Scotia quem genuit, quem lactavere Camana?
