A message from the President of the United States, by Mr. Walker, his secretary:

Mr. President: The President of the United States approved and signed, the 6th instant, the act (S. 79) to provide for the confirmation of certain settlement claims in the Greensburg land district, Louisiana: and, the 7th instant, the act (S. 127) to surrender to the State of Tennessee all the title the United States have to lands in Tennessee south and west of the line commonly called the Congressional reservation line, and to release to said State the proceeds of such of said lands as may have been sold by the State of Tennessee as the agent of the United States.

Mr. Dickinson, from the Committee of Claims, to whom was referred the petition of Archibald Smith, jr., and to whom was also referred the petition of David L. White, submitted a report; which was ordered to be printed: and,

On motion by Mr. Dickinson,

Ordered, That the committee be discharged from the further consideration of the said petitions.

Mr. Cass, from the Committee on Foreign Relations, to whom was referred a memorial of citizens of Florida, submitted a report, accompanied by a bill (S. 257) to carry into effect the provisions and stipulations of the 9th article of the Florida treaty with respect to certain losses of Spanish subjects in West Florida.

The bill was read and passed to the second reading.
Ordered, That the report be printed.

On motion by Mr. Dickinson,

Ordered, That the Committee on Naval Affairs be discharged from the further consideration of the petition of Hugh Wallace Wormley.

The Vice President laid before the Senate a report of the Secretary of the Treasury, accompanied by a report of the superintendent of the construction of standard weights, measures, and balances, showing the progress of the work during the past year.

The report was read.

On motion by Mr. Huntington,

Ordered, That it be printed; and that two hundred and fifty additional copies be printed for the use of the superintendent of weights and

measures.

The Senate proceeded to consider, as in Committee of the Whole, the bill (H. R. 54) for the relief of Smith, Thurgur & Company; and, having been amended, it was reported to the Senate, and the amendments were concurred in.

Mr. McDuffie, from the Committee on Foreign Relations, to whom was referred the bill (H. R. 109) entitled "An act to carry into effect a convention between the United States and the republic of Peru, concluded at Lima the 17th day of March, 1841," reported it without amendment.
