Description of a painting on wood deposited by Col. T. Bailey Myers in Redwood Library:

The picture is about 5 feet long and 2 feet wide. It represents Newport previous to 1740, the city in the rear, the river in the middle and Fort George in front. Ships are on the water flying the old Colonial flag, one like which is still in possession of Messrs. N. H. & D. Gould. This picture was originally painted on a panel over a mantelpiece in the house of Joseph Clark, Esq., for many years general treasurer of the Colony of Rhode Island, great uncle of the Messrs. Gould. When the house was sold out of the family, the picture was cut out of the panel and disposed of to one of the family of Mr. Mordecai Myers, the father of T. Bailey Myers, Esq. The picture is marked, "Deposited by Col. T. Bailey Myers, Newport, R. I. 1776."

Whilst in Newport in August 1873, I visited Mr Sam'. Engs at his residence in Kay Street, 34 house from the Cemetery. He showed me an old "waste book " of John Bannister, merchant in 1746-1747, wherein I saw an entry of Jacob Rod. Rivera of N. Y. He is charged 1747, January 12. Goods sent from Newport to New York £149.18.5. Mr. Engs was willing
