the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow with them.

The Minister, after entering the Church, shall read portions of the Holy Word and offer exhortation and prayer, at his discretion, And when they come to the Grave, while the Corpse is being made ready to be laid into the earth, the Minister shall say,

MAN

AN that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live in this earthly scene. He cometh up and is cut down like a flower: he fleeth as it were a shadow, and never continueth in one stay.

In the midst of life we are in death; of whom may we seek for succour, but of thee, O holy and most merciful Saviour, who alone knowest the secrets of our hearts.

Then, while the earth shall be cast upon the Body by some standing by, the Minister shall say, ORASMUCH as it hath pleased Almighty

FOR

God of his great mercy to take unto himself the soul of our dear brother here departed, we therefore commit his body to the ground, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; with the deep and abiding conviction that the scene of his existence is now transferred to another world, through the power of Him who hath said in His Gospel,

I

AM the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth, and believeth in me, shall never die.-John xi. 25-26. ¶The Benediction.

COLLECTS, OR PRAYERS,

TO BE USED ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS,

BLE

EITHER IN PUBLIC OR PRIVATE.

Collect before reading the Scriptures. LESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience, and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us, through the living sphere of thy Divine Humanity. Amen.

¶ Collect for protection from evils.

ALMIGHTY God, who seest that we have

no power of ourselves to help ourselves; Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through thy most mighty protection, both now and ever, O Lord, our Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Collect for preservation of state.

LORD, the protector of all who trust in thee, and who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may be surely fixed upon the joys of thy everlasting kingdom. Amen.

Collect for blessing on our undertakings. SSIST us mercifully, O Lord, in all our

doings with thy most gracious favour, and further us with thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally attain to the joys of everlasting life, through thy mercy, O blessed Lord God, who dost live, and govern all things, world without end. Amen.
