The Constitutions of the Several Independent States of America: The Declaration of Independence ; the Articles of Confederation Between the Said States ; and the Treaties Between His Most Christian Majesty and the United States of AmericaLondon printed, from the original Philadelphia edition, with an advertisement by the London editor: and Dublin reprinted, for Messrs. Gilbert, Price, Walker, White, Beatty, Byrne, and Cash., 1783 - 264 էջ First printed in Philadelphia in 1781, in an edition of 200 copies, this work collects the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the constitutions of the thirteen states and the 1778 treaties with France, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance. In the Adverstisement, dated June 15, 1782, the London editor, more accurately, re-printer, promoted his effort by noting that only a few copies from "the smaller number" of the Philadelphia edition "were sent to Europe." It deserved to be reissued, he goes on to say, because it "may be considered as the Magna Carta of the United American States, as the code of their fundamental laws, and, in short, the book which the opposite parties among them will at all times claim in some shape or other, and the knowledge of which is necessary to such persons as wish to understand the present or future internal American politics" ([ii]). |
