JOHN V.

19

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for 20 what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and 21 he will show him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son 22 quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath com23 mitted all judgment unto the Son: that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not 24 the Father which hath sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have 27 life in himself; and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, be28 cause he is the Son of man. Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in 29 the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they 30 that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. 31, 32 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witness33 eth of me is true. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. 34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might 35 be saved. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for 36 a season to rejoice in his light. But I have greater witness than that of John for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same 37 works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

And

the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye 38 have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39 Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they 40 are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might 41 have life. I receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye 42 have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father's name, and ye 43 receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will re44 ceive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and 45 seek not the honour that cometh from God only? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, 46 in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me : 47 for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon 3 the sabbath day. But 25 he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with 4 him; how he entered into the house of God, and did eat the showbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but on5 ly for the priests?

Or

have ye not read in the law,5 how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? 6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the 7 temple. But if ye

38. THE HEALING OF THE WITHERED HAND ON THE SABBATH.-Galilee:

MATT. XII. 9-14.

9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their syna10 gogue: and, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.

11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on 12 it, and lift it out? How

much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand 4 forth. And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held 5 their peace. And when he had looked round about on them with 10 anger, being grieved for the hardnessoftheir hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out and his hand was restored whole as the other. 11 6 And the Phariseeswent forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians2 against him, how they might destroy him.

man whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? And looking round about upon them all,

he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. And they were filled with madness ; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. [See in § 40.]

1 With anger: this is a remarkable statement respecting the meek and gracious Redeemer, and it affords a striking illustration of the compatibility of holy resentment with perfect benevolence. Compare Eph. 4. 26, Be ye angry and sin not." Anger is not, as many think, necessarily sinful.

multitude from Galilee followed 8 him, and from Judea, and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him. 9 And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they 10 should throng him. For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, 11 as many as had plagues. And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.

and charged them that they 17 should not make him known that it might be fulfilled which was 18 spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit 19 upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive, 20 nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send 21 forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. [See in § 48.]

41. THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT.-Near Capernaum.

MATT. V. 1-VIII. 1.

And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto 2 him and he opened his mouth, 20 3 and taught them, saying, Blessed

are the poor in spirit: for theirs is 4 the kingdom of heaven. Blessed 21 are they that mourn: for they shall 5 be comforted.* Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the 6 earth.5 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled." 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they 8 shall obtain mercy. 1 In the plain (éπi тónov nedivov), properly on a level place, i. e. a piece of table-land on a mountain, and not what we should call the plain, which would be either ǹ wedivý or tò médiov. That this level spot lay on some high ground or mountain is indicated by the use (in preference to the dative) of the genitive case, which is not employed with ení except when the noun governed denotes something that is conceived to be itself elevated; so in Luke 22. 40, we have Èπì Tоυ TÓTоV (on the spot) used of Gethsemane, which lay on the slope of Mount Olivet; compare also Matt. 24. 3, 30; Luke 4. 29; 22. 21; Acts 20. 9; 21.40; and Zech. 14. 10 in the Septuagint. This peculiarity (hitherto

you, and when they shall separate

unnoticed) in the usage of the genitive after èπí is
submitted to the examination of Greek scholars.
The result of this strict rendering of the expres-
sion is highly interesting, as it enables us at
once to harmonize the statements of the evan-
gelists, inasmuch as Luke too shows that the
sermon was delivered on a mountain, or some
high ground, though on a level place.
