SIR: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 13th instant, calling my attention to the provisions of section 11 of the act of August 26, 1842, and to transmit herewith a table showing the names of all persons who have been employed in this office within the year ending December 31, 1868, the length of time each person has been employed, and the amount of compensation paid to each.

All these persons have been usefully employed, except M. D. Landon, Henry M. Slade, J. H. McBlair, Henry B. Cole, and J. B. Bodwell, respecting whom I had the honor to address you some time since. Mr. Landon and Mr. Cole are not now connected with this office, and Mr. Slade has resigned his place therein, the same to take effect on the 1st of March next. Mr. McBlair still remains in the office, but is not performing any service which will warrant his retention therein. Mr. Bodwell has been absent for several months past, and is, of course, performing no duty.

I do not think that the services of any of the other persons named can be dispensed with consistently with the public interests.

I have the honor to be, very respectfully,

Hon. HUGH MCCULLOCH,

Secretary of the Treasury.

EDWARD JORDAN,
Solicitor of the Treasury.

Statement showing the names of clerks and other persons employed in the office of the Solicitor of the Treasury during the year ending December 31, 1868, the length of time each of them was so employed and the compensation paid them, respectively.

The clerks and other persons whose names are on the list have uniformly been usefully employed, and I do not think the services of any of them can be dispensed with without detriment to the public service. I am not aware of any changes that would be desirable at present.

Very respectfully,

Í. R. HULBURD, Comptroller.

Hon. H. McCULLOCH,
Secretary of the Treasury.
