at 40s., and are still held at 38s. per qr. Other unusually abundant, particularly of Indian corn; descriptions are likewise 28. to 3s. per qr. higher than they were. The inquiry for foreign beans has not been active, but the advance in the price of English has not been wholly without influence. Good parcels of Egyptian have lately been disposed of at 28s. to 29s. per qr.

and we feel fully satisfied that in the spring we shall receive very large supplies of the last-named article, as well as a good quantity of wheat and flour from the other side of the Atlantic. At present, however, there is clearly no chance of shipments being made, the price of flour being 5 d. 75c. to 6 d. per barrel at New York by the latest advices, which would render the cost laid down here about 58. per brl. above what it is now worth in the London and Liverpool markets.

There seems equally little prospect of any imme

White boiling peas were for two or three weeks much sought after, and rose rapidly during the first fortnight in October, 58s. and even as much as 60s. per qr. having been paid for picked samples. Subsequently rather a large supply reached us from abroad, which had the effect of causing a re-diate importations from the continent of Europe; action of 28. to 3s. per qr. English hog and maple peas have scarcely varied in value, 43s. to 44s. having been the current price for the former, and 44s. to 40s. per qr. for the latter.

Indian corn does not increase in favour as an article of human food on this side of the Channel, but in Ireland it appears to be tolerably well liked. The business done in this article in the London market has been on a retail scale, and principally in the inferior and partially-damaged qualities, which have been taken for feeding purposes, at prices varying from 25s. to 32s. per qr.

Indian-corn meal was in the early part of the month held at 16s. per brl, of 196lbs., but sales have since been made at 14s. to 14s. 6d.

There is still a good deal of Russian rye-flour in the market, more or less tart. This article has been pretty extensively tried for fatting pigs and other purposes, and seems to have given much satisfaction: the price at present is £6 10s. to £7 per ton, with an increasing demand. Though there is not much prospect in the existing position of affairs either of imports into or exports from this country, still it may not be amiss, before we conclude our remarks, to take a brief notice of the state of the principal foreign grain markets.

but we are tolerably sure that, after the sowing season shall have terminated, the stocks at the different ports will soon increase, and with the re-opening of the navigation in spring we may expect shipments to England to recommence.

The latest accounts from Danzig inform us that a few parcels of new wheat had come to market, which had disappointed expectations as regarded quality and weight, the latter being only 58lbs. to 59 lbs. per bush. Of old wheat hardly any remained; and for the trifling lots exhibited prices equal to 528. to 57s. per qr. free on board had been asked. The new had been bought for shipment to Holland and Belgium at 42s. to 44s. per qr.

From Konigsberg we continue to receive very unfavourable reports respecting the potato crop, and articles likely to be used us substitutes for that root had risen materially in value. Mixed wheat. of 604lbs. weight, had sold at equal to 498. per qr., and white peas had realized 36s. 6d. per qr.

From the Lower Baltic ports the advices also express great fears as to the potatoes keeping during the winter, there being, it is said, evident symp toms of the disease in most parts of Germany. At Stettin, Rostock, and other places from whence the finer sorts of red wheat are usually received, the price of the article was about 46s, to 48s. per qr. free on board; and at Hamburg the fine Up land qualities, weighing 63lbs, per bush., were still held at equal to 53s. per qr. free on board.

America being the quarter from which the public are generally disposed to look for large supplies, we shall in the first instance advert to the latest advices from thence. By the "Sarah Sands" we have letters from New York of the 5th inst., and In the French, Dutch, and Belgian markets the accounts of corresponding dates from other parts value of wheat is too near on a par with what of the United States and Canada. From these it is in this country, to render any business probable: appears that the stocks of bread-stuffs had been it appears, however, by a recent letter from Marreduced into an unusually small compass at all the seilles, that a purchase of a cargo of fine Polist leading ports on the seaboard, and from the interior Odessa had been made there on British account at hardly any supplies had come to hand. The dull 438, per qr. free on board. We need scarcely re accounts from this side had, therefore, failed to mark that the operation is not likely to be repeated. produce any effect on prices; indeed, quotations To the price must be added at least 5s. 6d. per qr. had rather advanced than otherwise, the quantity for freight, and probably 28. more to cover other brought forward for sale having scarcely proved expenses, rendering the cost here at least 50s. për equal to the local consumption. It is, however, qr., whereas similar sorts are only worth about 45s. admitted on all hands that the harvest had proved to 46s. per qr. at Mark Lane.

The public sales of colonial and other wools commenced on Thursday, and at a most inauspicious time as in the present state of the money market our readers may suppose. The attendance of buyers is moderate; but a great deal of the wool advertised is being withdrawn. Prices have declined 2d. to 3d. per lb., compared with the last series. The quantity declared is about 30,000 bales.

On Thursday Messrs. J. T. Simes and Co., put up 1,378 bales; 506 being Australian, which sold at 1s. 1d. to 1s. 10d.; and 872 bales Port Philip, 1s. to ls. 4d. per lb.

Friday's sale was by Mr. H. P. Hughes, and comprised 1,167 bales. 200 bales Australian brought 1s. 2d. to 1s. 7d.; 783 bales Port Philip, 10d. to 1s. 5d.; 109 Swan River, 10d. to 1s. 24d.; 18 New Zealand, 94d. to 11d.; and 7 South Australian, 84d. to 11d. per lb.

Messrs. C. and J. D. Jacomb, on the same day, put up 316 bales. There were 230 bales Portland Bay sold at 8d. to 10d.; and 35 bales Van Dieman's Land at 10d. to 1s. 2d. per lb.

On Saturday, Messrs. Marsh and Edenborough put up 1,320 bales; Port Phillip sold up to 1s. 5d. per lb. ; Cape to 1s. 31d. The sale went better than the previous
