King upon my boiy bill of Zion, Pfalm ii. 6.Thirdly, He is, as Tidal was, King of Nations -Who would not fear thee, O King of Nations, Jer. x. 7. he has power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as the Father hath given bim, John xvii. 2. Fourthly, He is King of Kings-by bim kings reign, and princes decree justice, Prov. viii. 15. Fifthly, He is King over fin; fin is faid to reign unto death, Rom. v. 21. but Chrift hath destroyed that monster-be was manifest that he might deftroy the works of the devil. 1 John iii. 8. and grace by him reigns over fin; Sin fhall not have dominion over the faints, for they are under grace; and grace fall reign through righteoufnefs to life eternal, Rom. v. 21.

Sixthly, Chrift is King over Death-which is called the king of terrors, Job xviii. 14.-Death reigned from Adam to Mofes, over all them that had not finned after the fimilitude of Adam's tranfgreffion, Rom. v. 14. but Chrift ranfomed his people from the power of the grave, and redeemed them from death; he was the plague of death, and the deftruction of the grave, Hofea xiii. 14. and must reign till he hath put down all rule, all authority, and all power; the last enemy that shall be deftroyed is death, 1 Cor. 15, 25, 26. Seventhly, Chrift is King over devils, though against their will; he demolishes the kingdom of Satan, and tranflates finners out of his dark dominions into his own kingdom, and into marvellous light, having deftroyed him that had the power of death, that is

the devil, Heb. ii. 14. and led him captive, and will bruise him under our feet shortly.

Thus Chrift is King of Glory, and the head of all principalities and powers;-the King of Zion-King of Nations-King of Kings-King over fin, and fin's dominion-King over deathand King over devils; and of his kingdom there fhall be no end. Ifa. ix. 7.

This wonderful lamb with feven horns is faid to have seven eyes, which are the Seven Spirits of God fent forth into all the earth. These feven fpirits are not seven angels; for though the church be called the apple of the Lord's eye, Zech. ii. 8. yet angels are never fo called that I remember; nor is the number of angels that attend the church of God confined to feven. Elifha had the whole mountains round about covered with them at Dothan, 2 Kings vi. 17. and Jacob faw fuch a number of them on the plains of Mahanaim, that he calls them an boft, Gen. xxxii. 2. They all minifter to the children of God in turn; not a fmall number only-as it is written, Are they not ALL miniftering Spirits, fent forth to minifter for them who fhall be heirs of falvation? Heb. i. 14. and if all are miniftering fpirits, and all fent forth to minifter, they cannot be fo small a number as feven, feeing we read of twenty thousand at one place, Pfalm lxviii. 17. and twelve legions at another, Matt. xxvi. 53.

But rather the Holy Ghoft is intended; the number feven implying the perfection of Deity, he

he being a perfon in the Godhead, and equal to the Father and the Son; from whom, in conjunction with the Father and the Son, this revelation is fent to the churches, Grace be unto you, and peace from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the feven Spirits which are before his throne; and from Jefus Chrift, who is the faithful and true witness, Rev. i. 4, 5. Or the Spirit's seven-fold gifts may be intended by the number feven, agreeable to ancient prophecy, And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon bim, the fpirit of wisdom and understanding, and the Spirit of council and might, the Spirit of knowledge, and of the fear of the Lord, Ifa. xi. 2. Thele feven eyes are quoted from ancient prophecy, which came to Joshua when the corner-ftone of the fecond temple was laid; which was to point Joshua to Chrift the chief cornerftone, that is fet at nought of fo many builders. Behold the tone that I have laid before Joshua: upon one ftone fhall be feven eyes. Behold, I will engrave the gravings thereof, faith the Lord of bofts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day, Zech. iii. 9. This text I have often heard handled, and the feven eyes have been held forth as all forts of eyes looking to Chrift, fome for help, and fome out of envy. However, they are the eyes of the Lamb, and the eyes of him who is the ftone of Ifrael. For who hath defpifed the day of Small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall fee the plummet in the band of Zerubbabel with thofe

feven they are the eyes of the Lord [not men nor devils eyes], which run to and fro through the whole earth, Zech. iv. 10. These feven eyes, which are the feven fpirits of God, are faid to be fent forth into all the earth, Rev. v. 6. agreeable to the Saviour's promife, It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter wil not come unto you; but if I depart I will fend him him unto you, John xvi. 7. which, bleffed be his precious name, he has. He has fent forth this feven-fold unition or eye-falve, which is, to anoint our eyes that we may fee, Rev. iii. 18. These feven eyes of the Lord are fent forth into all the earth, that we who were once darkness might be made light in the Lord, Eph. v. 8. Upon the church of God there hath been, and still is, a large meafure of the Spirit of God; and though not in all his fulness, yet in all his seven-fold operations, and to each living member of the mystical body of Christ, a measure to profit withal. Now there are diverfities of gifts, but the fame Spirit. And there are differences of adminiftrations, but the fame. Lord. And there are diverfities of operations, but it is the fame God which worketh all in all. But the manifeftation of the Spirit is given to every man, to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom, which makes a man wife in the myfteries of God, and wife to salvation through faith; to another, the word of knowledge by the fame Spirit, that he may take Chrift for himself, whom to know is eternal life, and know how to fpeak a word

a word in season to others; to another, faith by the fame Spirit, that he may believe to the juftification of his foul, and ftrengthen the faith of others; to another, the gifts of healing by the fame Spirit, for the good of the church, that bodily and spiritual diseases may be healed by the great Physician; to another, the working of miracles, that the apostles might by them confirm their miffion and commiffion; to another, prophecy, that a minifter may forewarn the churches of evils to come, and ftrengthen them against them, and foretell them of good to come, and encourage their hope to expect it; to another, difcerning of Spirits, that a minifter may try those upftarts that say they are apostles or evangelists, and prove them liars, if they are not, Rev. ii. 2. to another, divers kinds of tongues, that minifters may overthrow the falfe conftructions that erroneous men, or carnal fchoJars, have put upon the word of God; and to another, the interpretation of tongues, that the pure, uncorrupted fenfe of fcripture, may be handed down to us, instead of old wives fables and country tales, that turn from the truth, and that hard or difficult parts of fcripture might be made plain to our shallow comprehenfions. But all these worketh that one and the felf fame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will, 1 Cor. xii.

4-II.

These are the feven eyes and the seven spirits of God, or the Holy Ghoft, who is perfect God, in his feven-fold gifts and graces, who will never leave the earth, till the laft elected foul that ever
