PRAYER.

God, who didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by the sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit; grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen'.'

SECTION I.

OF MAN, AND HIS FALL.

[ocr errors]

In the beginning of the world, God, who by his mighty power, made all things of nothing, also created Man after his own image and similitude; and did appoint, that out of man' (so constituted) woman should take her beginning.' Thus our first parents, Adam and Eve, were created and sanctified; that is, made holy, just, and good. But, by the craft and assault of the devil', who appeared in the shape of a serpent, they fell from this state of innocency,' and, in a great measure, lost their original righteousness, entailing the same fallen nature upon all their descendants; for 'Original sin standeth not in the following of Adam; but it is the fault and corruption of the nature of every man, that naturally is engendered of the offspring of Adam; whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness, and is of his own nature inclined to evil, so that the flesh lusteth always contrary to the spirit. By reason of this frailty of our nature',' we err and stray from God's ways like lost sheep; we follow too much the devices and desires of our own hearts; we offend against God's

holy laws; we leave undone those things which we ought to do, and we do those things which we ought not we are vile earth, and miserable sinners ;' tied and bound with the chain of our sins, and there is no health in us.' For, 'through the weakness of our mortal nature, we can do no good thing '.' Through our sins and wickedness we are sore let and hindered in running the race that is set before us m.' And because the frailty of man,' of itself, cannot but fall",' the transgressions are 'manifold, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against the Divine Majesty;' and by these we have ' provoked most justly God's wrath and indignation against us.'

Now seeing that all they are accursed, as the prophet David beareth witness, who do err and go astray from the commandments of God P;' and forasmuch as all men are conceived and born in sin, (and that which is born of the flesh, is flesh) and they that are in the flesh cannot please God, but live in sin; therefore, in every person born into this world, it deserveth God's wrath and damnation "!'

OF THE METHOD OF MAN'S RECOVERY.

[ocr errors]

WHEN mankind were fallen from their state of 'innocency";' when we had provoked most justly God's wrath and indignation against us *;' the Almighty, who knew us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright,' still mercifully looked upon our infirmities; and, in our danger and necessities, stretched forth his right hand to help and defend us.' Though for our evil deeds we worthily deserved to be punished a;? yet, of his tender love towards mankind, He sent his Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, to take upon him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross for our Redemption ".' He' He gave his only Son to die for our sins, and to rise again for our justification; and desiring not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live of his great mercy, He hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that, with hearty re

pentance and true faith, turn unto Him.' His 'property is always to have mercy, and He will mercifully forgive them their trespasses, and receive and comfort those who are grieved and wearied with the burden of their sins. To Him only it appertaineth to forgive sins; and He will turn his anger from those who meekly acknowledge their vileness, and truly repent them of their faults; and so He will make haste to help them in this world, that they may ever live with Him in the world to come, through Jesus Christ our Lord f.'

For them our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the cross'.' 'There (by his one oblation of himself once offered) He made a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world;' and' by his merits and death, and through faith in his blood, all his whole Church may obtain remission of sins, and all other benefits of his passion i.'

Moreover, because the condition of man, after the fall of Adam, is such, that he cannot turn and prepare himself by his own natural strength and good works to faith and calling upon God; therefore the Almighty mercifully grants that his Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts',' 'that we may worship Him, serve Him, and obey Him as we ought to do ".'
