Excerpt from Representative English Plays: From the Middle Ages to the End of the Nineteenth Century; Edited With Introductions and Notes

While the third lesson [of the Easter matins service] is being chanted, let four brethren vest themselves. Let one of these, vested in an alb [a white tunic which would suggest the angel] enter as though to take part in the service, and let him without being observed approach the place of the sepulchre and there sit quietly, hold ing a palm in his hand. While the third respon sory is being sung, let the remaining three follow, all three vested in copes [vestments like long cloaks] and carrying in their hands censers filled with incense, and, stepping hesitantly in the manner of those seeking something, come before the place of the sepulchre. These things are done in imitation of the angel seated at the monument and of the women coming with spices to anoint the body of Jesus. When, there fore, he who sits there shall see the three ap proach like folk straying and seeking something.
