22. The Birth of Moses.

Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph: and he set over them task masters, to afflict them with their burdens. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew.

Therefore Pharaoh, the king, charged all his people, saying, "Every son that is born of them ye shall cast in the river, but every daughter ye shall save alive."

And when the daughter of Pharaoh came to wash herself at the river, she saw a basket floating on the water; and she sent to fetch it. And when she had opened it, she saw a male child, and the babe wept.

And she had pity on him, saying, "This is one of the Hebrew's children." And she called the child Moses, and brought him up as her

own son.

And when he was grown up, he fled from Pharaoh into Midian, and there kept the flock of Jethro, the priest of Midian.

"And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh ; Thus saith the

Lord, Let my

children go

that they may serve me: and if thou refuse, I will slay thy son, even thy first born." And the Lord also said, "Aaron thy brother, shall go with thee."

And Moses and Aaron went to the children of Israel and to Pharaoh, as the Lord had commanded; and Pharaoh refused to let them go.

And the Lord visited Egypt with mighty signs and wonders. He turned their waters into blood; he sent storms of hail, and various diseases, and swarms of locusts, and thick darkness which lasted for three days and three nights; and he slew in one night all the first born of the Egyptians.

And the children of Israel continued in the wilderness

for forty years. And the LORD GOD guided and protected them, and fed them with manna from heaven giving them his holy command

ments.

And Moses went up from

the plains of Moab, to the top of Pisgah: and there the Lord shewed him the land of Canaan, which he had promised to the children of Israel; and Moses died there.

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid hands on him; and they obey Joshua, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

25 The Conquest of Canaan.

Then Joshua came to the river Jordan, and he passed over with the army of the children of Israel, opposite to the city of Jericho. And they did compass the city, and went round it with the ark of the Lord, for six days.

And the seventh day, when
