Poor helpless worms in thee posess
Grace, wisdom, pow'r and righteousness;
Thou art our mighty All, and we.

Give our whole selves, O Lord to thee. 163

Bath Abbey.

NOW begin the heavenly theme,
Sing aloud in Jesus' name;
Ye who Jesus' kindness prove,
Triumph in redeeming love.
Ye who see the Father's grace
Beaming in the Saviour's face;
As to Canaan on ye move,
Praise and bless redeeming love.
Mourning souls dry up your tears,
Banish all your guilty fears;
See your guilt and curse remove,
Cancell'd by redeeming love.
Ye alas! who long have been,
Willing slaves of death and sin,
Now from bliss no longer rove,
Stop and taste redeeming love.
Welcome all by sin oppress'd
Welcome to the Saviour's breast:
Nothing brought him from above,
Nothing but redeeming love.

BLOOD has a voice to pierce the skies,
Revenge! the blood of Abel cries;

But the dear stream when Christ was slain
Speaks peace as loud from every vein.
Pardon and peace from God on high,
Behold, he lays his vengeance by;
And rebels that deserve his sword,
Become the fav'rites of the Lord.
To Jesus let our praises rise
Who gave his life a sacrifice:
Who now appears before his God,

And for our pardon pleads his blood.

NOT all the blood of beasts,

On Jewish altars slain,

Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away the stain.

But Christ, the heavenly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;

A sacrifice of nobler name
And richer blood than they.

My faith would lay her hand
On that dear head of thine,
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.

My soul looks back to see

The burden thou didst bear,

When hanging on th' accursed tree;
And hopes her guilt was there.

Believing we rejoice

To see the curse remove ;

We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice,
And sing his bleeding love.

[blocks in formation]

NOTHING but thy blood, O Jesus,
Can relieve us from our smart,
Nothing else from guilt release us,
Nothing else can melt the heart.

Law and terrors do but harden,
All the while they work alone,
But a sense of blood bought pardon
Soon dissolves a heart of stone.
Jesus, all our consolations

Flow from thee, the sov'reign good;
Love, and faith, and hope, and patience,
All are purchas'd by thy blood.
From thy fulness we receive them;
We have nothing of our own;
Freely thou delight'st to give them
To the needy who have none.
Teach us, by thy patient Spirit,
How to mourn and not despair;
Let us, leaning on thy merit,

Wrestle hard with God in prayer.
Whatsoe'er afflictions seize us,
They shall profit, if not please;

But defend, defend us, Jesus,

From security and ease.

CURS'D be the man, for ever curs'd,
That doth one wilful sin commit;
Death and damnation for the first,
Without relief, and infinite.

Thus Sinai roars, and round the earth,
Thunder and fire and vengeance flings:
But Jesus, thy dear dying breath,
And Calvary say gentler things.
Pardon, and peace, and boundless love,
Streaming along a Saviour's blood;
And life, and joys, and crowns above
Procur'd by our Redeemer God.

Hark, how he prays; (the charming sound>
Dwells on his dying lips)" Forgive;"
And every groan and gasping wound
Cries, Father, let the rebels live.

Go you that rest upon the law,

And toil and seek salvation there;

Look to the flame that Moses saw,
And shrink, and tremble, and despair.
But I'll retire beneath the cross;
Saviour, at thy dear feet I'll lie,
And the keen sword that justice draws,
Flaming and red, shall pass me by.

O HAPPY souls are they

Whose sins are covered o'er!
Divinely bless'd, to whom the Lord
Imputes their guilt no more.

They mourn their follies past,
They keep their hearts with care;
Their lips, and lives, without deceit,
Shall prove their faith sincere.
While I conceal'd my guilt,
I felt the festering wound,
Till I confess'd my sins to thee,
And ready pardon found.

Let sinners learn to pray,

Let saints keep near the throne; Our help, in times of deep distress, Is found in God alone.

HOLY, and just, and righteous God,

Before thy face we fall:

We dread thy sin avenging rod,

But still for mercy call.

Mercy divine through Jesus' love
Reveal'd the wond'rous plan;
And justice joins the work t'approve
Which saves rebellious man.

In Christ we full redemption crave,
Through his atoning blood;
