6 A refuge this, when none beside,
Can firm support bestow;

This is a bank which Jordan's tide,
Shall never overflow.

7 'Tis this, when ebbing life retires,
Shall heav'nly peace distil;

And this shall sweep our golden lyres,
On Zion's sacred hill.

14 C. M. Holiness.

NEEDHAM.

HOLY and rev'rend is the name

Of our eternal king!

Thrice holy LORD! the angels cry,
Thrice holy let us sing.

2 The deepest rev'rence of the mind,
Pay, oh my soul, to GOD!
Lift with thy hands, a holy heart,
To his sublime abode.

3 With sacred awe, pronounce his name,
Whom words, nor thoughts, can reach ;
A broken heart shall please him more
Than the best forms of speech.

4 Thou holy GOD! preserve my soul
From all pollution free!

The pure in heart are thy delight,
And they thy face shall see.

L. M. God of Salvation.

KELLY.

1 SALVATION IS OF GOD ALONE,
The glorious plan is all his own;
In love he form'd the great design,
And here his grace and wisdom shine.

2 SALVATION IS OF GOD ALONE,

'Tis he who breaks the heart of stone, Who makes self-righteous boast to cease, And gives the troubled conscience peace.

3 SALVATION IS OF GOD ALONE,
"Tis he who leads his people on,

'Tis he who makes their burdens light,
And shields them in the day of fight.

4 SALVATION IS OF GOD ALONE,
He sets his people on his throne;
'Tis rapture all, and triumph then,
They never taste of grief again.

5 SALVATION IS OF GOD ALONE,
This truth let all his people own,
And to his name the praise be giv'n,
By saints on earth, and saints in heav'n.

C. M.

God is Love.

FOR a seraph's tongue, to join
The song of realms above!
To catch the joy inspiring theme,
And sing that God is love.

ANON.

2 There the bright hosts around the throne, Unceasing rapture prove;

And through a blest eternity,
Re-echo, God is love.

3 Poor, weak, and worthless in myself,
I often from him rove;

Yet still be pardons and receives,
Because he still is love.

4 Lord, give me with a grateful heart,
Thy mercy to improve;

And Ebenezers daily rear,
To praise the God of love.

DIVINE PROVIDENCE.

17 C. M. God's Providence mysterious.

1 G

COWPER,

OD moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform;

He plants his footsteps in the sea,

And rides upon the storm.

2 Deep in unfathomable mines,
Of never failing skill;

He treasures up his bright designs,
And works his sov'reign will.

3 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take,
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.

4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust him for his grace ;
Behind a frowning providence,
He hides a smiling face.

5 His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding ev'ry hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

6 Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan his work is vain;
GOD is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

11's. The Lord will provide.

ANON.

WE

WHEN wealth hastes away,'like a bird in its flight, Whose plumage just shines, as it glides out of sight; While faith by afflictions is painfully tried,

How cheering the promise, "the Lord will provide."

2 If friends should forsake, when they see me distrest,
His word and his spirit, this lesson suggest,

Depend not on mortals, whose breath will subside,
Trust wholly in God, for "the Lord will provide."

3 When dread and despondency rise in my mind, And I look all around a helper to find,

I see in his promise, no doubt is implied,

'Tis his positive word, "the Lord will provide."

4 While fear hints, there's something he still will deny, "No good thing,"-is faith's most decisive reply; Whate'er he withholds, is most wisely denied; How full is the promise, "the Lord will provide."

With my sorrows and sins to Jesus I fly,
On his promise unchanging, I firmly rely;
And I'll sing every day, whate'er may betide;
"The Lord has provided-the Lord will provide.”
