BRIGHTON:

H. & C. TREACHER, north st., and B. LEWIS, ST. JAMES'S ST.

1867.

PREFACE

TO THE FIRST EDITION.

This book is intended to be what its name imports: -a Church-book* for the public worship of Almighty God. The Prayers, and the Psalms and Hymns, have been selected and compiled with this view. The guiding principle has been that every Prayer and Hymn should be in harmony with the Holy Scriptures. Needless repetitions have been avoided in the Services and Offices: while considerable variety has been secured by having four orders of Morning Prayer, and four of Evening Prayer. It is hoped that this book will, in some degree, meet the present requirement for a revised, abridged, and Scriptural Liturgy in Churches not ruled by the Ecclesiastical Law of England.

The Name or Title applied to the Book of Liturgical Forms, Psalms, and Hymns of the first three centuries. Bunsen's "Hippolytus and his age."-Vol. 2., pp. xvi. and iii.
