HYMN 35.

66

'Freely ye have received, freely give." MATT. x. 8.

1. TEACH US, O Lord, thy yoke to wear,
Delighting in thy perfect will;

Each other's burthens let us bear;
And thus thy law of love fulfil.

2. Teach us, with glad, ungrudging heart,
As Thou hast bless'd our various store,
From our abundance to impart

A liberal portion to the poor.

3. To Thee ourselves devoted be

In whom we breathe, and move, and live :
Freely we have receiv'd from Thee,
Freely may we rejoice to give.

4. And while we thus obey thy word,
And every call of want relieve,
Oh! may we find it, gracious Lord,
More bless'd to give than to receive.

HYMN 36.

BAPTISM.

"Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God." MARK x. 14.

1. THE gracious Saviour calls
Our children to his breast;

He folds them in his gentle arms,
Himself declares them blest.

2. "Forbid them not," He cries,
Scorn not their humble claim :

The heirs of heaven are such as these,
For such as these I came.

3. Gladly we bring them, Lord,
Devoting them to Thee;

Imploring, that as we are thine,
Thine may our children be.

HYMN 37.

"When he ascended up on high he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men." EPH. iv. 8.

1. THE happy morn is come!

The Saviour leaves the grave;
His glorious work is done,

Almighty now to save:

Captivity is captive led,

Since Jesus liveth, that was dead.

2. Who to our charge shall lay

Iniquity and guilt?

All sin is done away,

Since his rich blood was spilt:

Captivity is captive led,

Since Jesus liveth, that was dead.

3. Christ hath the ransom paid;
The glorious work is done;

On Him our help is laid;

The victory is won :

Captivity is captive led,

Since Jesus liveth, that was dead.

HAWEIS.

HYMN 38.

From Psalm xix.

1. THE spacious firmament on high,
With all the blue ethereal sky,

And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
Their great original proclaim!
The unwearied sun, from day to day,
Doth his Creator's pow'r display;
And publishes to every land
The work of an Almighty hand.

2. Soon as the evening shades prevail

The moon takes up

the wondrous tale,

And nightly, to the listening earth,

Repeats the story of her birth:

While all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,

Confirm the tidings as they roll,

And spread the truth from pole to pole.

3. What though in solemn silence all

Move round the dark terrestrial ball?
What though no real voice nor sound
Amid their radiant orbs be found?
In reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice,
For ever singing as they shine,
"The hand that made us is divine."

(Creation.)

ADDISON.

HYMN 39.

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life." JOHN xiv. 6.

1. THOU art the way; to Thee alone
From sin and death we flee;

And he who would the Father seek
Must seek Him, Lord, by Thee.

2. Thou art the Truth; thy word alone
True wisdom can impart ;

Thou only canst inform the mind,
And purify the heart.

3. Thou art the life; the op'ning tomb
Proclaims thy conquering arm,

And them who put their trust in Thee
Nor death, nor hell, shall harm.

4. Thou art the way, the truth, the life:
Grant us that way to know,

That truth to keep, that life to win,
Where joys eternal flow.
