A wildering forest feathered o'er
His ruined sides and summit hoar,
While on the north, through middle air,
Ben-an heaved high his forehead bare.

[blocks in formation]

To purple changed Loch Katrine blue;
Mildly and soft the western breeze

Just kissed the lake, just stirred the trees,
And the pleased lake, like maiden coy,
Trembled but dimpled not for joy;
The mountain shadows on her breast
Were neither broken nor at rest;
In bright uncertainty they lie,
Like future joys to Fancy's eye.
The water lily to the light
Her chalice rear'd of silver bright;
The doe awoke, and to the lawn,

Begemmed with dew-drops, led her fawn;
The grey mist left the mountain side,
The torrent showed its glistening pride;
Invisible in flecked sky

The lark sent down her revelry;
The blackbird and the speckled thrush
Good-morrow gave from brake and bush;

In answer cooed the cushat dove

Her notes of peace, and rest, and love.

YOUTH.

BY SCOTT.

WOE to the youth, whom fancy gains,
Winning from Reason's hand the reins,
Pity and woe! for such a mind

Is soft, contemplative, and kind,
And woe to those who train such youth,
And spare to press the rights of truth,
The mind to strengthen and anneal,
While on the stithy glows the steel!
O teach him, while your lessons last,
To judge the present by the past;
Remind him of each wish pursued,
How rich it glow'd with promised good;
Remind him of each wish enjoy'd,
How soon his hopes possession cloy'd,
Tell him we play unequal game

Whene'er we shoot by Fancy's aim;
And, where he strip him for her race,
Show the conditions of the chase.
Two sisters by the goal are set,
Cold Disappointment and Regret :
One disenchants the winner's eyes,
And strips of all its worth the prize;
While one augments its gaudy show,
More to entrance the loser's woe;
The victor sees his fairy gold

Transform'd when won, to drossy mould;
But still the vanquish'd mourns his loss,
And rues as gold that glittering dross.
