* Of the total amount of £38,108,270 issued by the Bank of England from the Issue Department £12,053,680 was held by the Bank of England in the Banking Department. Deducting this trom the total issue, it leaves £40,884,374 as the actual circulation of notes in the United Kingdom on the above date.

† It will be seen from these figures that the issues upon credit of certain Scotch and Irish Banks are below their limits authorised by the Acts of 1845.

The average weekly amount cleared for the year ending 29th December, 1880, based on the foregoing figures, was £109,957,000; whilst the daily average on Stock Exchange settling days for the same period was £47,797,000.
