BRAHMAPUTRA, the largest river in India, and known in Tibet by the name of the Sanpoo. Its sources have never been explored; but it is probable they may be found in the track of elevated land situat ed between the Himmalaya and Cailas ranges of mountains, adjacent to the celebrated lake of Manasarova, After running a considerable distance to the eastward, it enters Tibet. It passes to the northward of Diggarcheh, the capital of the Teeshoo Lama, and thence flows in a wide expanded bed, through many channels, and forming a multitude of islands. Proceeding east, it passes about 30 miles to the south of the city of Lassa; and then taking a vast circuit round the mountains, it is conjectured to approach within 220 miles of China. About the longitude of 96. E. it makes a sudden curve to the south, and afterwards to the west, when it en ters the province of Assam. In long. 91, 48. it divides into two great branches, which inclose an island of 120 miles in length. Continuing its course to the west, it enters the province of Bengal, near to the town of Goalpara. After this it makes a circuit round the Garrow mountains, and then altering its course to the south, joins the Megna, in Lat. 24. 10. in the distriet of Dacca. The whole length of its course is supposed to be 1650 miles; but a small portion only of the territories through which it flows, are known to Europeans; and the navigation is supposed to be obstructed by cataracts, on its entrance into Assam. Notwithstanding its immense magnitude, it is not considered as sacred by the Hindoos, nor was its name known in Europe till the middle of the last century.
