Portentous events proclaiming the coming of the MessiahParallel between those and the pageantries which attend earthly monarchs-The Lord ascends his throne Eternal-Satan, who had since the fall of our first parents dwelt in the air, now falls, not able to witness the splendour of the Godhead-The Almighty's address to Satan falling-Satan dares not reply-The last Vials poured out-Storms-Volcanic Eruptions-Rome utterly destroyed -Destruction of Cities, and changes thence produced-Changes as much to be noticed in the productions of the Earth, in the brute creation, &c.--The order of the Sun, Moon and Stars changedSigns seen in the Sun-The Earth convulsed-The coming of the Saviour-He gathers together the Elect-Demands and receives homage from the kings of the Earth-Satan's amazement Attempts to stir up ambition and rebellion-Christ anxious to spare the race of man calls their attention to former chastisements -Points out that Satan had fallen in consequence of his prideThat he (CHRIST) is surrounded by Legions of Angels, and that one word from him would cause their immediate destructionVain-glory spurs the followers of Satau on in their mad careerChrist gives the word-Satan's troops are arrested and fallFeast of vultures and every unclean bird upon the fallen Captains -The feelings of the faithful on witnessing the overthrow of Satan and his allies-Satan called before Christ-Appears-Is bound-Appears in his proper shape-Hideousness thereof-Is conveyed to his prison house-Situation of the mouth thereof-Is sealed up-The Almighty proclaims " 'tis done"-Messiah's song to the Almighty on the overthrow of Satan-All kinds of music united with the Voices of Saints and Angels in the praise of JEHOVAH. BOOK II. The awful day's with darkness overcast,Shrill roars the wind-all powerful is the blast:The Earth is frighten'd from her wonted way, The Sun forbids his light to gild the day.― Huge clouds-with torrents vast-a deluge pour, Th'uptearing whirlwind deafens with its roar.The flame-fork'd lightnings dart from Pole to Pole, And the hoarse thunder shakes the sinner's soul.Peal after peal-in long succession roars,(7) Proclaiming to the world's most distant shores The living GOD-then some—with horrid dread, Call on the hills to hide their guilty head.
