DEVOTIONAL ASSISTANCE for the Communion, from BISHOP KEN: with Alterations.

A Prayer for PARDON.

THOU, Father of mercies, and God of all confolation, be merciful to me a miferable finner.

Behold, Lord, though my tranfgreffions are many, yet have I confeffed, bewailed, and refolved to forfake them. I come to thy table weary and heavy laden with the burden of my fins, be it unto me according to thy word. Thou art faithful and juft; forgive me my fins, and cleanfe me from all unrighteoufnefs. Caft me not away from thy prefence, but deliver me from my burden, that I may find reft in thee, and be enabled to fay unto my foul, be of good cheer, thy fins are forgiven thee.

O Heavenly Father, for thine infinite mercies' fake, for all the merits and fufferings of thy fon, in whom thou art always well-pleased, pardon all my fins, and receive me, a true penitent, into thy favour for ever. Amen.

A Prayer for GRACE.

O Bleffed Saviour, perfect thy ftrength in my weakness; for in thee only is my trust. Thou haft promifed to give thy holy spirit to thofe that afk it. Behold, Lord, I now moft earnestly implore it; fulfil thy gracious promife; vouchfafe me that holy fpirit I pray for, to purify my corrupt nature, to ftrengthen my weakness, to comfort me in troubles, to fupport me in adverfity, to fuccour me in temptations, and to affift me in all parts of my duty, that I may ever hereafter live in thy fear, and in conftant, fincere, and univerfal obedience.

Thou, O fearcher of hearts, knowest the fins I am moft inclined to; and that particular failing in which is my greatest danger; grant me a double portion of thy

invifible aid against it. Hold thou up my goings in my paths, that my footsteps flip not. O work in me that victorious. faith, by which I may overcome the world, the devil, and my own corrupt nature.

True it is, O Lord God, that there are many fins which, upon examination, I find, through thy grace, I have not yet committed, and therefore not unto me, Lord, but to thy name be the glory: But, alas! there is in my corrupt nature fo great a pronenefs to evil, fo great an inclination to fin, that without thy restraining grace, every temptation, feconded by opportunity, may draw me from obedience, and overthrow my prefent refolutions.

But my help ftandeth in thee, O great Creator, who hast made heaven and earth; and I commit my foul to thy keeping. Vouchfafe to watch over me, that I may not be beguiled by the deceitfulness of fin, or betrayed by my own treacherous heart, or furprised by my ghoftly enemies, and give me grace to watch and pray inceffantly myfelf, left I enter into tempt

A Prayer for PARTICULAR Graces.

O that my ways were made fo direct, that I might keep thy ftatutes, O Lord, for then shall I not be confounded, when I have refpect unto all thy commandments.

Vouchfafe me thy holy fpirit therefore, O Lord God, to work in me whatever is well-pleafing in thy fight, that for the time to come I may bring forth fruits, meet for repentance.

O let it be thy good pleasure to create in me a faving knowledge of thee and of my duty, juftifying faith, true fanctifying grace, and a purifying hope, an ardent love, and a filial fear of thee, a conftant defire of pleafing thee, and a great tendernefs of offending thee.

Lord, create in me a penitent heart, a refigned will, and mortified affections, an habitual mindfulness of thy prefence, and a fteady devotion in my prayers, fincere intentions and zeal for thy glory, perfever

ance in all holy purposes, and conftancy in all trials and temptations.

Lord, create in me a reverential awe of thy name, a delight in thy fervice, a fecret regard to this day and houfe of prayer, and a great attention to thy word; a daily care of my time, and diligence in all my praife-worthy purfuits and honeft employments.

Lord, make me chafte and temperate, humble, meek, and patient of reproof; and create in me a chearful and gentle, a contented and confiderate, a quiet and peaceful spirit.

Lord, blefs me with health and competency of living, with a good understanding, a retentive memory, and a ready apprehenfion; and with fuch a portion of temporal good things, as thou feelt fit for me, and give me grace to make a right ufe of all the bleffings I have already received.

Lord, purify my thoughts, bridle my tongue, guide all my actions, guard all my fenses, stop my ears, and turn away my eyes, from fin and vanity.
