serveth our spirits, and thou, Lord, makest us to dwell in safety.

Min. O thou most high God, possessor of heaven and earth, the judge of all, and the universal King, thy government is righteous, thy providence perfect, and all thy commandments are holy, just, and good; the obedience of all reasonable creatures is due to thee alone, the King of kings, the Lord of lords, the blessed and only po

tentate.

Peo. We bow ourselves before thee, thy willing subjects; thy commandments are true, and righteous altogether.

Min. O God, thou art our creator, and righteous governor; we rejoice in the being which we have received from thee; we yield a willing submission to all the orders of thy government, and we address thee as our Father who hast made us to bear thine image, and to partake of the blessings of thy family.

Peo. We are thy children; therefore do we pray unto thee.

Min. We rejoice in thy fatherly care, which thou

hast manifested unto us, ever since we came into the world; we put our confidence in thee, whose counsel is our guide, and whose favour is our highest happiness.

Peo. Blessed be the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men.

Then may follow a Voluntary on the Organ; after which the FIRST LESSON is to be read out of the Old Testament ; and then the Service is to proceed with the following Thanksgiving. Minister.

EVER gracious and most merciful Father; thou art the giver of all good; thou delightest in the happiness of thy creatures, and art daily imparting the riches of thy bounty.. We thank thee for all the instances of thy goodness to us. Thou art the former of our bodies, and the Father of our spirits; thou hast exercised a wise and gracious care over us, ever since we came into the world; by thee are all our wants supplied, from thee all our enjoyments proceed,

and thou crownest our days with thy goodness.

We thank thee for reason and understanding, and for all the treasures of knowledge thou hast opened to our view; that thou hast formed us for the practice of virtue and true religion, and given us opportunities for the improvement of our minds, and the attainment of our highest happiness.

We thank thee, that we are placed in a social state, are endued with social affections, and may enjoy so many pleasures, from the esteem and friendship of our brethren.

To thy goodness we ascribe all the enjoyments we receive from the practice of virtue, and the just exercise of our powers; the variety of trials thou hast appointed for the improvement and perfection of our natures here, and the prospect thou givest us of a more happy and perfect state hereafter.

People.

We give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, and his mercy endureth for ever.

of

We bless thee, thou wise and gracious disposer of all things, for the various dispensations of thy providence in favor of religion and the happiness mankind, in the several ages of the world; for all the divine messengers thou hast sent, by whose instruction and example thy light and truth have been preserved in the darkest times of ignorance and idolatry.

Above all we thank thee, for the display of the exceeding riches of thy grace in Jesus Christ, by whom thou hast made every necessary provision for our improvement in true religion.

Blessed be thy name, God, for this divine teacher and Saviour, whom thou hast sent to declare unto us thy heavenly will, to save us from ignorance and vice, and to lead us, by his heavenly instructions and perfect example, to the love and practice of universal goodness.

We praise thee, O merciful Father, for all that he hath done and suffered to

redeem us from all iniquity, and to purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

We offer up our warmest gratitude to thee, that notwithstanding our marifold sins and imperfections thou hast appointed us to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, that by him we are assured of pardon, and thy gracious acceptance, upon our return to obedience and virtue; that he has opened before us the solemnities of a future judgment, and confirmed to us the joyful hope of glory, honour, and immortality.

People.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is good, and his mercy endureth for

ever.

Here the SECOND LESSON is to be read, out of the New Testament; and then the Minister may say,

HE who covereth his sin shall not prosper, but whoso confesseth and for

saketh his sin shall obtain mercy.

O come, let us worship, and fall down; let us kneel before the Lord our maker; against him have we sinned and done evil in his sight.

GENERAL CONFESSION.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, we confess that we have sinned against thee; we have disregarded thine authority, and abused thy goodness; we have acted inconsistently with our christian character, and departed from thy holy commandments; we have been unmindful of the perfect example set before us, and forgotten the sure and precious promises to which we are called. Our only hope is in thy mercy. Suffer us not, O Lord, to perish in our transgressions; Save us from the dominion of them for the time to come. Grant us, we beseech thee, thy gracious assistance in the future course of our lives, and teach us to act agreeably to the profession which we make, and the desires we

have now expressed before thee. Give us such a deep persuasion of the evil of sin, and of the importance and excellence of a holy and virtuous life, that we may carefully abstain from all iniquity, and be filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are to thy honor and glory. Vouchsafe unto us the light of thy countenance, and establish our minds in a firm reliance on thy goodness and mercy declared unto mankind, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep thy law.

Then shall be read the COLLECT FOR THE DAY, and one or more of the following Prayers. FOR ALL MANKIND.

O GOD, the Father of all mankind, we rejoice in thy universal providence, and commit to thy direction all the concerns of our fellow creatures. Thou art the fountain of all blessings, thou delightest in

doing good; grant, merciful Father, that all mankind may perceive thy hand in the advantages which they enjoy, and be disposed to render thee their humble thanks for all the instances of thy beneficence. Fill the minds of thy reasonable creatures with the knowledge of thy truth; cause thy light to shine upon those who sit in darkness; dispel the prejudices under which they labour; above all, we beg that thou wouldst deliver them from every evil affection, and bring them into the way of truth and happiness.

May the gospel of Jesus prevail through the world, and by the power of its truth, and the exemplary conduct of those who profess it, may it enter the hearts and govern the lives of all the inhabitants of the earth, and make all nations righteous and happy.

Reform, we beseech thee, all the disorders which arise from the evil passions of men, and prosper the just designs of all those who delight in peace; may the blessings of free and equal government become universal; and un

der the influence of good laws, and a righteous administration, may all the advantages of civil society be widely extended, and the best interests of mankind be effectually secured; and whilst thy creatures enjoy the gifts of thy bounty, may they unite in praise and thanksgiving to thee, the Author of all good, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR OUR COUNTRY.

WE commit to thee, our righteous Governor, all the important interests of our country; grant, we beseech thee, that we may live in safety, and enjoy the blessings which thy providence hath bestowed upon us, in tranquillity and peace. Mercifully preserve us from all public calamities; and may true religion and virtue so prevail among us, that our tranquillity may be continued, and our distinguished privileges be handed down to succeeding ages. Vouchsafe thy favor to all orders of men among us; by a diligent and cheerful discharge of the duties of their several stations, may

they contribute their part to the public welfare, and the happiness of all mankind. Bestow upon us, O merciful Father, every thing truly good, and may we with one heart acknowledge and praise thee, who art good, and doest good continually. Amen.

FOR RULERS.

O MOST mighty God, we commend to the care and direction of thy providence, the President of the United States, and all others in authority. May they be men fearing God, and hating covetousness; may they have wisdom to discern and firmness to pursue the true interests of this people; may they employ all their influence to promote peace and virtue ; and under their government, may justice and judgment run down as a river, and righteousness as a mighty stream. FOR CHRISTIAN MINIS

TERS.

Amen.

WE recommend to thy gracious regard the ministers of the christian religion, humbly beseeching thee that their faithful en
