SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

THE QUORN COUNTRY.-Mr. Green's establishment is to be broken up at the end of this season, and Sir Richard Sutton takes the country-for a longer lease we hope than has lately been allowed, for it will be difficult to find a better man.

DEATH OF "ROB-ROY."-This celebrated deer, of which we gave a likeness in our February number-vide "Who's up to the Rescue?" -was drowned in the early part of last month, in the water adjoining Gerrard's Cross Common, where he had sought the usual refuge of his race. Another favourite, and more fresh hind, "Richmond," was also lost on Monday the 15th, when he was turned out on Ascot Heath, and run into and killed in the neighbourhood of Bagshot; while on the following day "Woodman" also fell a victim to "the Royals," whose maxim of " to save rather than to slay" seems lately to have been rather in abeyance. The country, however, has been dreadfully heavy, and horses naturally short of work, so that living with staghounds has been more or less an impossibility, and "Who's for the rescue?" an unanswerable query. The open weather, in fact, that has at last come, has brought with it plenty of fatal effects in the shape of severe runs, finishing off with deaths to many a good horse, as well as fox and deer.

YACHT PRIZES.-"Much conversation has recently arisen in yachting circles relative to prize-cups and other racing rewards. It is now the opinion of many leaders in the aquatic world, that a salver or a coffee-pot--in short, something that would be useful and lasting in a man's family-is the prize that clubs ought to offer, instead of, as heretofore, a meaningless cup, which simply glitters for a season on a sideboard, and then, with a little rubbing, loses its silver gloss, and displays the "rottenness" beneath. Now a table lamp would be a good prize, based on a rock, the rock bearing a lighthouse, the lantern of which would contain and be illuminated by the flame of a candle-a patent wick, for instance. Another prize recommended is a soup-tureen, in the shape of a turtle."-Bell's Life. The "meaningless cups," referred to by our cotemporary, that "glistened in a row" on a sideboard, like Jorrocks' dozen of prize hats, ought to be quite out by this time, though we yet doubt the pull the useful will have over the ornamental. The chaste and elegant designs of Cotterill and others have set a fashion in Turf Remembrancers that yachtsmen can hardly be wrong in adopting. They offer a field, too, particularly inviting for display of this character.

COURSING. DEATH OF "EMPEROR."-This celebrated greyhound died a few weeks ago, twelve years old. He was originally the property of Mr. Easterby, of Preston, who gave him to Mr. Rowley. He afterwards again became the property of Mr. Easterby, in whose

possession he remained. He was the sire of Priam, winner of the Waterloo Cup; of Harlequin, also a winner of the Waterloo Cup; of the celebrated Irish bitch Lady Harkaway; of Mr. Graham's Agitation, and a host of other great winners. His height was 28 inches; he was never weighed. He ran 82 courses, out of which he won 66; he was only two days short of six years old, when he ran second to Earwig for the Waterloo Cup; and what is remarkable, through all his courses he never fell, and only four hares escaped. When he beat Mr. Eden's Echo, at Southport, he leaped over the old water-course, clearing 9 yards 12 inches from foot to foot, as measured by Hugh Sutton, gamekeeper to Sir P. Hesketh Fleetwood. Such are a few of the deeds of one of the best dogs ever bred.

CRICKETING IN FRANCE.-We hear from good authority, that it is the intention of some of the principal professors to select two elevens from the entire strength of the cricketing world, for the purpose of visiting France at the end of the summer, and playing a series of matches in Paris and its neighbourhood. From the novelty of the game and celebrity of the players, we have no doubt our Parisian friends will be highly delighted, and give them a hearty reception. Really, what with the different tastes we are so ready to give them-racing, steeple-chasing, and cricketing, to wit—it will be strange if we cannot innoculate a few of our next door neighbours.

ARCHERY.-GRAND ARCHERY METTING AT NOTTINGHAM. We learn with pleasure that the committee appointed to arrange for the "Grand National Archery Meeting of 1847" have fixed upon Nottingham as the place of meeting. This annual celebration of a sport which is associated with the bygone days of chivalry and romance, is to take place in August, and the Nottingham Meadows -a most eligible and beautiful spot-has been selected as a suitable situation.

Ether is now being applied with the greatest success in many veterinary establishments, where it is certainly, of all places, the most needed. Amongst others, the well-known Messrs. Barrow, of Newmarket, have been reported as exercising its influence in the most difficult cases. For firing, castration, and other severe operations, we hope to soon hear of its being generally adopted.

STATE OF THE ODDS, &c.

The betting of this last month, divided, as it has been, over so many different events, and interrupted, of course, by the Liverpool, Coventry, Warwick, and Northampton Meetings, presents so unimportant a whole as to scarcely be worthy or necessary of comment. Of the Handicaps, the Newmarket and Metropolitan are as yet anything but general betting races; while, for the Chester Cup, the indifference displayed during the few weeks past has fully confirmed our first impression: it still gives every promise of being the dullest lack-a-daisycal Cup ever brought into

the market. A first favourite, certainly, has been found in Antler; though, for our own part, we have no great faith in "turn again" race horses. Punch, Mickey Free, and Camera Obscura have also friends, who seem to be in earnest; the last, though, only in certain quarters. Newcourt, too, Inheritress, Plaudit, and even Sir Tatton, with his "steadier," contrive to keep something like a position before the public, but beyond that or them we cannot certify." The Stockbridge mare, that was to bewonder The Lamb, and the still lighter in and heavier backed Golden Bee, are all the worse since our last report: a great many others entirely non est in the market, and the remainder still showing a return far more like "fancy" than business prices.

For the Derby, Planet has gradually got the better of Epirote, who is in all points a worse favourite than hitherto; not but that he has still some support from the stable and its train. The advance of the Goodwood nag has been, perhaps, just half a shade or so prejudicial to his companion Glentilt, and coupled with something more direct, of palpable depression to Red Hart, who is now gone right "bock agen." The chief change, however, on this race may be considered the formida ble advance of the Liberator, whose friends have tired the layers more than once at some of the figures named--a feat of no very common achievement in these dull days. Conyngham holds his own, if not more, and may be always heard of with credit; as, once more, may Christopher, with an improving appearance, that should give something like the lie direct to the infirmities he has lately been affirmed to be blessed with. In the reverse we find Horn of Chase, Wanota, Allertonian, Lunedale, the Cobweb Colt, and Old Port, next door to shelved; and then, last of all, conclude our notice with a word touching the first of all-Van Tromp who was never on better terms than he is at this writing.

Mr. Parr's horses, it is duly announced, are in future to be trained by F. Bell, the jockey. To our thinking, Jockey Bell will have his work well cut out, to improve on Mr. Parr's own plan, who could always place them to pay some-how and some-where or another.

RUFF'S GUIDE TO THE TURF.-The Spring edition of this work, containing the racing past of last year, and the racing to come of this, is just published. We believe the mere announcement to be amply sufficient for a hand-book so generally referred to and relied on.
