PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

A LARGE impression of this Work having been distributed gratuitously, and the Book continuing to be applied for, the Editor is induced to prepare a second Edition for Sale, in the hope that the further circulation of the Work may be of use to the Small Farmers and the Agricultural classes generally; and with the view of facilitating this object, the price is fixed so low, as barely to cover the cost of the Paper, Printing, and Binding.

The approbation with which the first impression was received, has encouraged the Editor to revise his little Work; and the valuable information which an extensive correspondence has brought to him from all parts of Ireland, has enabled him to make certain additions and corrections in the present Edition, which the judicious Agriculturist will readily discover and appreciate.

It has been thought desirable to insert, by way of Appendix, an Extract from Mr. Nicholls' Third Report, descriptive of the system of cultivation, and the condition and habits of the Small Farmers in Belgium; where the size of the Farms, and other circumstances, bear a close resemblance to what prevails in many parts of Ireland.

Dublin, 10th April, 1842.

THE FARMER'S GUIDE.

ΤΟ

THE SMALL FARMERS AND COTTER TENANTRY

OF

IRELAND.

ALTHOUGH many works on Agriculture have been published, and some of them closely resembling this compilation, we know of none exactly adapted to your wants and circumstances; and it may, therefore, be useful to furnish you with a small book of plain suitable instructions, to which you can refer in your agricultural occupations and domestic economy. This is here attempted, and the Table of Contents will enable you at once to turn to any particular subject. We have borrowed from various works whatever appeared to be useful-our wish being to put into your hands, in a simple and concise form, a collection of practical directions, compiled chiefly from MACKENZIE, BLACKER, JACKSON, POOLER, and MARTIN DOYLE, to help and guide you in the performance of your every-day duties.

You must bear in mind, however, that the benefit to be derived from these directions will mainly depend upon the steadiness and vigour with which they are applied; for one man will thrive where another will fail, although each may farm his land by the same rules; the success of the one, and the failure of the other, depending

upon their respective exertions. Every tradesman is supposed to understand the rules of his trade, but the work performed will be according to the skill and industry of the individual. So in the business of life, that man will be most successful, who considers well before he commences an undertaking, and then steadily uses his best efforts in carrying it into effect.

Observe your thriving neighbour, and you will uniformly find him considerate, careful, and laboriousobserve, on the contrary, those in a state of poverty and want, and you will find the majority of them indolent or negligent, wasteful, improvident, or vicious: and be assured, that it is not by violent exertions for a particular object, or for a limited period only, but by an earnest, constant, regular application of your time labour and abilities, that you can attain prosperity, and provide the comforts of life for yourselves and your families.

Although addressed especially to the small farmers and cotter tenantry, it is hoped that the following pages may prove useful to the larger farmers also, by placing before them in a simple and condensed form, the leading principles by which they ought to be guided in conducting their agricultural operations.

THE EDITOR.
