I wish to be distinctly understood as not impugning the motives of any man or any body of men by the opinions offered to the public in this work. I do not mean to deny that there have been and are good and pious individuals among the papists. Such men as Pascal and Fenelon are indeed burning and shiping lights unto the world. But I appeal to the evidence of facts to prove that popery as a system, political and moral, uniformly produces the effects ascribed to it in the following pages.
