A SIXPENNY SONG.

SING a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye:
Four and twenty blackbirds
Baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened,

The birds began to sing;
Was not that a dainty dish.
To set before the King?

The King was in the parlour
Counting out his money;
The Queen was in the kitchen
Eating bread and honey;
The Maid was in the garden
Hanging out the clothes;

Down came a blackbird

And perched upon her nose.

GAMMER GURTON.

INSCRIPTION ON AN ANTIQUE RING.

I'LL heare thy voice of melodie

In whispers of the summerre air; I'll see the brightnesse of thine eye

In the blue eveninge's shininge starre;

In moonlighte beames thy puritie;
And look on heavenne, to look on thee!

CARMEN DENARIUM.

INCIPE cui titulo Denarius,' incipe cantum!

Huic tumido loculo massa secalis inest : Sex quater in patina merularum corpora, crustum Queis superimpositum pista farina fuit,

Procubuere simul: sed quando adaperta farina est, Concordes merulis insonuere modi:

Mirum opus harmoniæ !-nonne inter fercula posset
Hæc vel regificæ lanx placuisse gulæ?

Rex erat in camera, numerans sibi pondera nummi,
Pondera plebeio non numeranda viro:
Mel mandit panemque morans Regina culina;
Dulcia plebeia non comedenda nuru.

Ad solem vestes siccans Ancilla per hortum
Ibat; et expansas aere funis habet;

Quum merula, affini descendens arbore, nasum

Ancillæ insiluit seque ibi constituit.

INSCRIPTUM IN ANNULO ANTIQUO.

VERNI canoris in Noti suspiriis

Cœleste vocis audiam melos tuæ ;
Oculi videbo fulgidi purum jubar

Non infidelis Hesperi sub ignibus:
Formosa mentem Luna depinget tuam;
Teque intuebor, intuens cœli vias.

ODE TO ADVERSITY.

DAUGHTER of Jove, relentless power,
Thou tamer of the human breast,
Whose iron scourge and torturing hour
The bad affright, afflict the best!
Bound in thy adamantine chain,

The proud are taught to taste of pain,
And purple tyrants vainly groan

With pangs unfelt before, unpitied and alone.

When first thy Sire to send on earth
Virtue, his darling child, designed,
To thee he gave the heavenly birth,
And bad to form her infant mind.
Stern rugged Nurse! thy rigid lore
With patience many a year she bore;

What sorrow was thou bad'st her know,

And from her own she learned to melt at others' woe.
