UNIVERSITY PRESS: LIBRARY OF PENSITY OR EDITOR'S PREFACE. 243 IN preparing the third edition of this Treatise on Highways I have added very nearly nine hundred cases to the citations; selecting, from the cases decided since the publication of the second edition, in the main those in which the questions of general interest and application are discussed, and omitting cases decided under local statutes, except where the same or similar questions are raised under enactments substantially alike in the statutes of different States. The Index of Subjects has been thoroughly revised, and additional references and cross-references made to it, to the extent of more than half its original size. Changes have been made in the body of the work to meet the course of decisions; and, to some extent, the example of making somewhat copious extracts from the opinions given in cases cited has been followed, but similar extracts, given in former editions, from discussions of questions that have been definitely settled by the later decisions have been omitted or greatly abbreviated. In this way, and by abbreviations in the Table of Cases, the new matter has been incorporated without largely increasing the bulk of the book. SALEM, March, 1886. |
