Our babes shall richest comforts bring;
If tutored right, they'll prove a spring

Whence pleasures ever rise :
We'll form their minds, with studious care,
To all that's manly, good, and fair,

And train them for the skies.

Then hand in hand, through life we'll go ; Its chequered paths of joy and woe

With cautious steps we'll tread; Quit its vain scenes without a tear, Without a trouble or a fear,

And mingle with the dead.

TRUE WOMANHOOD.

127

TRUE WOMANHOOD.

HE was a phantom of delight
When first she gleamed upon my sight;
A lovely apparition, sent
To be a moment's ornament;
Her eyes are stars of twilight fair ;
Like twilight's, too, her dusky hair ;
But all things else about her drawn

From May-time and the cheerful dawn;
A dancing shape, an image gay,
To haunt, to startle, and waylay.
I saw her upon nearer view,
A spirit, yet a woman too!
Her household motions light and free,
And steps of virgin liberty ;
A countenance in which did meet
Sweet records, promises as sweet ;
A creature not too bright or good
For human nature's daily food ;
For transient sorrows, simple wiles,
Praise, blame, love, kisses, tears, and smiles.
And now I see with eye serene
The very pulse of the machine ;
A being breathing thoughtful breath,
A traveller betwixt life and death ;
The reason firm, the temperate will,
Endurance, foresight, strength, and skill;
A perfect woman, nobly planned,
To warn, to comfort, and command ;
And yet a spirit still, and bright
With something of an angel light.

She secheth wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her bands.

She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

Strength and honour are her clothing ; and she shall . rejoice in time to come.

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and cateth not the bread of idleness.

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth ber.

Many daughters habc done birtuously, but thou excellest them all.

fabour is deceitful, and beauty is bain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

Proverbs xxxi. 10-13, 29, 25–30.
