RIGHT HON. EARL OF SHAFTESBURY,
PRESIDENT OF THE BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY,
In dedicating this volume to your Lordship, I cannot omit to acknowledge the kind manner in which that honour
was granted. The chief merit of the work consists in its record of the wonderful and successful operations of the great Institution over which your Lordship has been called to preside, and of the extraordinary endowments and virtues of the excellent men who have been its principal labourers.
Having been for more than forty years connected with the Bible Society, privileged with an acquaintance with many of its agents, and to co-operate, on some occasions, in
parts of its agencies, I have felt delighted in bringing together
the memorials of those “who being dead yet speak,”—and trust that this volume will be approved by your Lordship, and
contribute, under the blessing of God, to promote the cause
of the British and Foreign Bible Society.
With prayers that your Lordship may be preserved long to labour for the Bible Society, and to witness its increasing triumphs, in advancing the kingdom of our Lord and Saviour,
I have the honour to remain,
Your Lordship's obedient servant,
