EVENSONG
FOR

THE FIRST SUNDAY.

The Minister, standing before the Congregation, shali reverently recite these sentences.

Arise, O Lord, into Thy resting place, Thou and the ark of Thy strength!

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He will sustain thee.

Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him; for He is meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Then shall the Minister pronounce this

Meditation.

O where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Man knoweth not the price thereof, Neither is it found in the land of the living. The depths of earth say, It is not in me! And the sea saith, It is not with me!

Wisdom cannot be gotten for gold.

It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir. No mention shall be made of coral or of pearls, The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it,

For the price of wisdom is above rubies.
Whence then cometh wisdom?

And where is the place of understanding?
God understandeth the way thereof,
He knoweth the place.

And unto man He saith:

Behold, the fear of the Lord! that is wisdom. And to depart from evil:

That is understanding.

Then shall be said or sung

Sursum Corda.

Minister.

Lift up your hearts.

People.

We lift them up unto the Lord.

Minister.

Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.

People.

It is meet and right so to do.

Minister.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of Heaven, we laud and magnify Thy glorious Name, praising Thee, and blessing Thee, for evermore.

Here shall all unite in singing Trisagion. Or sometimes on special occasions, the Choir may sing the Sanctus alone.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts! Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Glory
