EVENSONG

FOR

THE FOURTH SUNDAY.

+

The Minister, standing before the Congregation, shall reverently recite these sentences.

Awake lute and harp! I will sing and give praise.

Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.

of

I will offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon the Name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord, now in the presence all His people, in the courts of the Lord's House, even in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem.

Then shall the Minister pronounce this
Meditation.

Blessed art Thou, O Lord Most Holy,
And blessed are they who dwell with Thee,
Who rest in Thy love and serve Thee.
O speed the day,

When the glory of life shall be clearly seen
And men of all climes shall acknowledge,
One Father, and one family,

On Earth and in Heaven;

When all who love Thee shall unite

To succor the poor and the oppressed.
Enable us to discern

And to love our brethren,
Whatever name they bear,

By whatever creed they are hidden from us.
Strengthen us, O Lord, for life and death,
That we may obey Thee cheerfully,
Strive earnestly, suffer patiently,
And thankfully enjoy whatever
Thou shalt send us.

Then shall be said or sung these versicles. Minister. Awake, O Arm of the Lord; People. Awake as in the ancient days. Minister. Teach us Thy way, O Lord; People. And take not Thy Holy Spirit

from us.

Minister. O Lord, open Thou our lips. People. And our mouth shall show forth Thy praise.

Minister. O God, make speed to save us; People. O Lord, make haste to help us. Minister. Glory be to the Father and the Son. and to the Holy Ghost;

People. As it was in the beginning, is now,

:

and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

Minister. Praise ye the Lord.

People.

The Lord's Name be praised.

Here shall be sung some specially chosen Hymn of Praise and Adoration. After this shall be read a

Psalm, or Selection of Psalms, from the Psalter, at the close of which shall be sung this Ascription.

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible the only wise God;

Be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lesson.

Here shall follow the Lesson which, though usually to be taken from the Old or New Testament, may be chosen at times from some other appropriate and reverend writing, the Minister telling where the Lesson is found and at the close saying Here endeth the Lesson. Whereupon shall be sung this or some other appropriate Canticle.

Deus Misereatur.

God be merciful unto us, and bless us and show us the light of His countenance, and be merciful unto us.

That Thy way may be known upon earth: Thy saving health among all nations.

Let the people praise Thee, O God: yea, let all the people praise Thee.

O let the nations rejoice and be glad for Thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.

Let the people praise Thee, O God : yea, let all the people praise Thee.

Then shall the earth bring forth her increase and God, even our own God shall give us His blessing.

God shall bless us and all the ends of the world shall fear Him.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. :

Amen.

Then shall be said or sung these versicles.

dom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Minister.

Ancient of Days, Infinite in Wisdom, as in Power and Love, we look to Thee, Thou alone canst order and maintain the innumerable worlds above, beneath, around us, and within us. Whom have we in Heaven but Thee, and there is none upon earth we desire in comparison of Thee. Thou art our strength and stay, the health of our life, the inspirer of our hope, the source of our deepest, holiest joy.

People.

Grant, Lord, to all who are in any trouble, of darkness or distress, of loneliness or sorrow, the joy of Thy consoling presence. And upon all who are unfortunate and unhappy, the discouraged and the sad, breathe Thou, dear Lord, the sustaining calm of Thy Holy Spirit. Be with Thy children who have lost their way, and with all who through ignorance or folly, or by their own indifference and sin, are estranged from Thee. Discipline us, as Thou wilt, if only Thou wilt bring us to ourselves, and lead us to a better life.

Minister.

We bless Thee Father, for that beatific vision. of Thy glory which we see shining in the face of Jesus Christ our Lord and in the lives of Thy good children all around us. Speak to us. Open our ears, that we may hear. Open our
