convention of the American Medical Association, held in Buffalo, in June, 1878. In it, he says: "They (the State Medical Societies) should employ their best endeavors to have State Boards of Health created where these do not exist, and they should, by all means, secure the right of nomination for appointment upon such Boards; otherwise positions which demand men of peculiar qualifications and sterling integrity will be conferred, as is too often the case, upon mere office hunters, who have no interest whatever in the matter beyond its pecuniary return. In this connection, I would call especial attention to the plan adopted by the State of Alabama, where the State Medical Association has been constituted the State Board of Health, and the county societies subordinate local boards, with power to select all the officers necessary to carry on the work, including that of quarantine."

What a happy effect these meetings have! We become acquainted with each other; we learn to respect each other; we crawl out of the shell of selfishness, and warm up into a brotherhood of good feeling on meeting with our co-laborers in the great work of medical reform. The old practitioner becomes more earnest, and the young more enthusiastic, and we all determine to put our shoulders to the wheel and do all we can to advance our profession and thus advance ourselves. No man knows his own capacity, and it is by a high aim and a great endeavor that we work out all that is capable within us.

"From the beginning our principle object has been to elevate, to purify, to regenerate the regular profession itself. Let us make ourselves what we ought to be, and everything else will then be well."-Ext. Book of the Rules. And may the Lord be with us in all our meetings, and in all our deliberations, and unite us with a religious feeling, in our high calling, that will do more than all else to elevate us as a profession.

Adjourned.
