TAIT McGill University URING a series of experiments with colors it was found that some subjects had some very strong likes and dislikes. One dislike in particular, which was unreasonable to the experimenter as well as to the subject himself, seemed worth while investigating, all the more so, as no reason could be given, nothing could be recalled which would throw any light on the matter. The idea was to see if any buried memory complex could be brought to consciousness. It should be stated that the subject is an experimenter himself, and has had several years' experience in the psychological laboratory, so that a case like this is worth more than one where the subjects are to some degree new to such work, expecially in experiments of this kind. The following instructions were given to the subject. Take the word "brown" (this being the color so heartily disliked) and write it down five times with as much concentration of attention as possible. Then start the metronome at about forty and write a word for every beat. (That was the ideal.) Do not criticize what you write. Give yourself a free hand as much as possible.
