THE THIRTIETH ANNUAL REPORT of Her Majesty's COMMISSIONERS for Building NEW CHURCHES.

TO THE HONOURABLE THE COMMONS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND, IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED.

HE

ER Majesty's Commissioners in their last Report stated, that 449 Churches had been completed, in which accommodation had been provided for 483,273 persons, including 281,076 free seats, appropriated to the use of the

poor.

They have now to state, that 21 Churches have, by the aid of grants from the funds placed at their disposal, been since completed at the following places; viz., in the district of Godley-cum-Newton, in the parish of Mottram, in the county of Chester; in the district of Carnmenellis, in the parish of Wendron, in the county of Cornwall; in the district of Charlesworth, in the parish of Glossop, in the county of Derby; in the district of Benfieldside, in the parish of Lanchester, in the county of Durham; in the district of St. Jude, in the parish of St. Philip and Jacob, Bristol, in the county of Gloucester; in the district of Bevington, in the parish of Liverpool; in the district of St. James, Burnley, in the parish of Whalley; and at Golborne, in the parish of Lowton, all in the county of Lancaster; at Upper Edmonton, in the parish of Edmonton; at Shepherd's Bush, in the parish of Hammersmith; at Ennismore Gardens, Knightsbridge, in the parish of St. Margaret, Westminster; and in St. Thomas's district, in the parish of Bethnal Green, all in the county of Middlesex; in Globe Street, in the parish of Rotherhithe; in the Wandsworth Road, in the district parish of St. Mark, Kennington, in the county of Surrey; in the district of St. Matthew, in the parish of Wolverhampton; in the district of Pensnett, in the parish of Kingswinford; in the district of Ocker Hill, in the parish of Tipton, in the county of Stafford; in the district of Oxenhope, and at Bankfoot, in the parish of Bradford; at Shelf, in the parish of Halifax, and at Baxtergate, in the parish of Whitby, in the county of York.

In these 21 Churches accommodation has been provided for 14,793 persons, including 10,114 free seats for the use of the poor.

Thus, in the whole, 470 Churches have now been completed, and provision has therein been made for 498,066 persons, including 291,190 free seats, appropriated to the use of the poor.

Her Majesty's Commissioners beg further to report, that 32 Churches are now in the course of building at the following places, to the erection of which they have, on certain conditions, contributed pecuniary aid from the funds placed at their disposal; viz., in the district of Saltley, in the parish of Astonjuxta-Birmingham, in the county of Warwick; in the districts of Charlestown and Treverbyn, in the parish of St. Austel, in the county of Cornwall; in the 628.

district of St. Jude, in the parish of St. Martin, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick; in the district of Gomersal, in the parish of Birstall; at Clayton, in the parish of Bradford, in the county of York; in the district of Godolphin, in the parish of St. Breage, in the county of Cornwall; in the Weir district of the city of Bristol; at West Brompton, in the district parish of Brompton, in the county of Middlesex; in the district of Ramsbottom, in the parish of Bury, in the county of Lancaster; in the district of Skewen, in the parish of Cadoxton, in the county of Glamorgan; at Totworth, in the parish of Chard, in the county of Somerset; in the district of St. Thomas, Woolwich, in the parish of Charlton, in the county of Kent; in the parish of Chorley, in the county of Lancaster; in the parish of Croydon, in the county of Surrey; at Edgehill, in the parish of West Derby, in the county of Lancaster; in the district of Bridge Hill, Belper, in the parish of Duffield, in the county of Derby; at Kingsley, in the parish of Frodsham, in the county of Chester; at Gwersyllt, in the parish of Gresford, in the county of Denbigh; in the districts of All Saints, and St. Matthew, Little London, in the parish of Leeds, in the county of York; in the district of St. Paul, in the parish of Llanelly, in the county of Carmarthen; at Heaton Mersey, in the parish of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster; at Haverstock Hill, in the parish of St. Pancras, in the county of Middlesex; in the district of Healey, in the parish of Rochdale, in the county of Lancaster; in the district of Moorfields, in the parish of Sheffield, in the county of York; in the district of Portwood, in the parish of Stockport, in the county of Chester; in the districts of St. James, St. Mary and St. Paul, Devonport, all in the parish of Stoke Dameral, in the county of Devon; in the district of Moxley, in the parish of Wednesbury, in the county of Stafford; in Great Peter Street, in the parish of St. John, Westminster, in the county of Middlesex; and in the district of Musbury, in the parish of Whalley, in the county of Lancaster.

The state of the works at each of these Churches on the 20th day of June 1850, is fully detailed in the Schedule accompanying this Report, marked (A).

Her Majesty's Commissioners have further to report, that Plans for 17 Churches have been approved of, to be built at the following places; viz., in the parishes of All Saints and St. John, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the county of Northumberland; at Coxhoe, in the parish of Kelloe; and at Hartlepool, in the parish of Hart, in the county of Durham; in the district of St. Luke, Bilston, in the parish of Wolverhampton; and in the district of Chesterton, in the parish of Wolstanton, in the county of Stafford; at Lydbrook, in Trinity district, in the Forest of Dean, in the county of Gloucester; at Ringley, and in Rooden Lane, both in the parish of Prestwich; in the district of Paddington, in the parish of Eccles; and in the district of St. Paul, Burnley, in the parish of Whalley, in the county of Lancaster; in the parish of St. Helen, Abingdon, in the county of Berks; at South Ossett, in the parish of Dewsbury; at Morton, in the parish of Bingley; and in the district of Pitsmoor, in the parish of Sheffield, in the county of York; at Gravesend, in the county of Kent; and in the Marsh district, in the parish of West Ham, in the county of Essex.

They have also under consideration plans for new Churches to be erected in Trinity district, Willenhall, in the parish of Wolverhampton, in the county of Stafford; at Eastwood, in the parish of Keighley, in the county of York; and at Marple, in the parish of Stockport, in the county of Chester.

Her Majesty's Commissioners have further to report, that they have made conditional grants towards the erection of Churches at the following places (which grants are still pending and unpaid, in consequence of some of these Churches not having yet been commenced, and others not having been completed and

consecrated);

Her Majesty's Commissioners annexed a Schedule to their last Report, containing a list of applications which had been made to them from various places for pecuniary aid towards building new Churches. A list of such applications as are still pending, and of those which have since been received, accompanies this Report, marked (B).

Her Majesty's Commissioners have, since their last Report, afforded, or expressed their willingness to afford, the facilities contained in the Church Building Acts (subject to the provisions relating thereto in the Public Health Act, 1848), for obtaining the enlargement of existing, or for providing new or additional Burial-grounds at the following places; namely, at Moulsford, and at St. Leonard's, Wallingford, both in the county of Berks; at Llanelly, in the county of Carmarthen; at Tydweiliog, in the county of Carnarvon; at Penrith and at Workington, both in the county of Cumberland; at Ilfracombe, in the county of Devon; at Walthamstow, in the county of Essex; for the parish of Flint, in the county of Flint; in St. Andrew's parish, in the borough of Hertford; for the parishes of Charlton, Lewisham and St. Mary Cray, in the county of Kent; at Goodshaw, in the parish of Whalley, in the county of Lancaster; at Sheepshead, in the county of Leicester; for the parishes of St. Mary and St. Peter, Barton-upon-Humber; at Bourne and Navenby, all in the county of Lincoln at Blidworth, in the county of Nottingham; for the Cosford Union, and for the parish of Hodnet, both in the county of Salop; at Elford, in the county of Stafford ; at Chertsey and Worplesden, both in the county of Surrey; at Birdham and at Horsham, both in the county of Sussex; at Long Sleddale, in the county of Westmorland; at Cherhill, Lydiard Tregoze, Marlborough, Melksham and Sherston Magna, all in the county of Wilts; at Moseley, in the parish of King's Norton; and for the parishes of Ribbesford and Tardebigge, all in the county of Worcester: at Stokesley, in the North Riding of the county of York; and at Barwick-in-Elmet, Kirkby Overblow, and Skelton, all in the West Riding of the county of York.

They have also afforded, or expressed their willingness to afford, the same facilities for obtaining sites for new Churches and Chapels at the following places; namely, at Colnbrook and at Prestwood, in the parish of Hughendon, both in the county of Buckingham; at Marple, in the parish of Stockport, in the county of Chester; at Par, in the county of Cornwall; at Beaminster and at Radipole, both in the county of Dorset; at Hartlepool, in the parish of Hart, in the county of Durham; at Forest Gate, in the parish of West Ham, in the county of Essex: at Water Moor, in the parish of Cirencester; at Highnam, in
