The Vice President laid before the Senate a report of the Secretary of the Treasury, made in answer to a resolution of the Senate, in relation to the banks in Illinois, which have applied to be made banks of deposite, since the late resumption of specie payments; which was read, and ordered to be printed.

Mr. Davis presented the memorial of a number of the citizens of New Castle, in the State of New Hampshire, praying the rejection of the bill (S. 261) before the Senate, to repeal the act entitled "An act laying a duty on imported salt, granting a bounty on pickled fish exported, and allowances to certain vessels employed in the fisheries," approved July 29, 1813, and all acts to continue or amend the same.

Ordered, That it lie on the table, and be printed.

Mr. Wright presented the petition of a number of the citizens of Erie county, New York, praying the passage of an act to authorize the importation of certain articles of Canadian produce, to be manufactured and exported, free of duties; which was referred to the Committee on Commerce. Mr. Tallmadge presented the petition of Henry Hall Sherwood, of the State of New York, praying the aid of the Government to enable him to perfect a new method, of which he is the discoverer, for determining, by the aid of magnetism, the variation of the needle, and for ascertaining the latitude and longitude, by sea and land; which was referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.

Mr. Clay, of Kentucky, presented the petition of a number of the citizens of New Orleans, praying the adoption of measures for obtaining from the Government of the Republic of Mexico, indemnity for spoliations committed upon their property; which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Roane presented the petition of Thomas R. Saunders, late a lieutenant in the United States army, praying to be allowed a pension, in consequence of an injury sustained during the last war with Great Britain; which was referred to the Committee on Pensions.

Mr. Roane presented the petition of William Hebb, keeper of the naval magazine at Washington, praying an increase of compensation; which was referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.

Mr. Foster reported from the committee that they had examined and found duly enrolled the following bills and resolution:

S. 35. An act making an appropriation for the support of the penitentiary in the District of Columbia;

S. 206. An act for the relief of the securities of Elias T. Langham, late surveyor of public lands for the States of Missouri and Illinois;

H. R. 1091. "An act to repeal the proviso to the 2d section of an act approved the 3d of March, 1837, which authorized the Secretary of the Treasury to compromise the claims of the United States against certain banks;"

S. 3. Resolution directing the manner in which certain laws in the District of Columbia shall be executed.

The following motion, submitted by Mr. Allen, was considered, by unanimous consent, and agreed to:

Resolved, That the Librarian be directed to make out and to report to the Senate, at the commencement of the first session of the next Congress,

a catalogue of all the laws and of all the Legislative and Executive journals and documents of the several States and Territories, now in the library.

Resolved, That the said bills pass, and that their respective titles be as aforesaid.

The bill (S. 82) for the relief of the owners of the ship Alleghany and their legal representatives, was resumed, as in Committee of the Whole; and, On motion by Mr. Hubbard,

Ordered, That the further consideration thereof be postponed until to.

morrow.

The Senate proceeded to consider, as in Committee of the Whole, the bill (S. 28) for the relief of Michael Ambrister; and no amendment being made, it was reported to the Senate.

Ordered, That it be engrossed, and read a third time.

A message from the House of Representatives, by Mr. Burch: Mr. President: The Speaker of the House of Representatives having signed four enrolled bills and an enrolled resolution, I am directed to bring them to the Senate for the signature of their President.

The Vice President signed the four enrolled bills and the enrolled resolution, last reported to have been examined, and they were delivered to the committee to be presented to the President of the United States.

The Senate resumed, as in Committee of the Whole, the bill (S. 131) to prevent the interference of certain federal officers in elections.

Mr. Roane presented the memorial of George Sweeney and others, citi zens of the District of Columbia, stating that they have associated themselves for the purchase and improvement of real property in the District of Columbia, and praying an act of incorporation; which was referred to the Committee on the District of Columbia.

Mr. Linn presented the memorial of the General Assembly of the State

of Missouri, praying the establishment of a port of entry and custom-house at some point on the river Missouri, and that the Santa Fe trade may be subjected to commercial regulations; which was referred to the Committee on Commerce, and ordered to be printed.

Mr. Linn presented the memorial of the General Assembly of the State of Missouri, praying an alteration in the present mode of issuing titles to land, at the several land offices; which was referred to the Committee on Public Lands.

Mr. Wall presented the memorial of the trustees of the Presbyterian church of Springfield, in Essex county, New Jersey, praying indemnification for the destruction of property while occupied by troops of the United States in the year 1780; which was referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Claims, and ordered to be printed.

Mr. Buchanan presented the memorial of Edward D. Tippet, in relation to the explosion of steam-boilers; which was referred to the Committee on Roads and Canals.

Mr. Linn presented the memorial of a number of the citizens of Missouri, praying the establishment of an additional fand office in that State; which was referred to the Committee on Public Lands.

Mr. King presented the memorial of a number of masters and pilots of steamboats, praying appropriations for a light-house and a light boat between New Orleans and Mobile; which was referred to the Committee on Commerce.

Mr. Webster presented the memorial of T. H. Perkins and others, praying the passage of an act for discontinuing the spirit ration allowed to seamen in the public service; which was referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs, and ordered to be printed.

Mr. Tallmadge presented the petition of Thomas B. Parsons, praying a pension in consideration of disabilities incurred in the naval service; which was referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.

Mr. Merrick presented a preamble and resolutions passed by the General Assembly of the State of Maryland, instructing the Senators and requesting the Representatives of the said State in Congress, to use their exertions to procure an appropriation for deepening the harbor of Havre-de-Grace; which was referred to the Committee on Commerce, and ordered to be printed.

Mr. Crittenden, from the Committee on Revolutionary Claims, to whom was referred the petition of the heirs of Preserved Clapp, submitted a report, accompanied by a resolution :

"That the prayer of the petition be rejected."
