Mr. Davis submitted the following motion; which was considered, by unanimous consent, and agreed to:

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Treasury be directed to report to the Senate such information as he possesses as to the following particulars: 1st. The amount of coin made at the mint, and the amount at each of its branches, for one year preceding the first day of January last.

2d. The amount of bullion deposited at, or obtained for, each establishment for the same time.

3d. The expense incurred in carrying on and in sustaining each establishment during the same time.

The bill (H. R. 269) to authorize the Washington County Turnpike Company, in the State of Missouri, to construct a railroad through the public lands, having been reported by the committee correctly engrossed, was read a third time.

Resolved, That this bill pass, and that the title thereof be "An act to authorize the Washington County and St. Genevieve Railroad Company, in the State of Missouri, to construct a road through the public lands." Ordered, That the Secretary request the concurrence of the House of Representatives therein.

The following bills were severally read the second time, and considered, as in Committee of the Whole:

S. 138. Bill for the relief of Samuel Collins;

S. 204. Bill to authorize the Secretary of War to adjust and pay to Benjamin Murphy, of Arkansas, the value of his corn, cattle, and hogs, taken by the Cherokee Indians in the month of December, 1828; and no amendment being made thereto, they were severally reported to the Senate. Ordered, That they be engrossed, and read a third time.

The Senate resumed the consideration of the bill (H. R. 1146) to provide for the erection of a new jail in the City of Washington, in the District of Columbia.

On motion by Mr. Niles,

'To amend the bill, by striking out all after the enacting clause, and inserting :

"That when the county of Washington shall have raised the sum of ten thousand dollars for the erection of a jail for the use of said county, there shall be paid from the Treasury of the United States, from any moneys not otherwise appropriated, the sum of ten thousand dollars, towards the expenses of the erection of such jail: Provided, That there shall be no further claim or demand on the United States, on account of the expendi tures which may be incurred for the erection of a jail for said county :" It was determined in the negative,

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1839.

Mr. Lyon presented the petition of a number of citizens of the counties. of Kent and Ottowa, in the State of Michigan, praying the establishment of a post route; which was referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

Mr. Lyon presented two petitions of a number of the citizens of Kent county, in the State of Michigan, praying an appropriation for the removal of obstructions at the mouth of Pigeon river; which was referred to the Committee on Commerce.

Mr. Linn submitted documents in relation to the claim of the heirs of Joseph Decelle, for the confirmation of their title to a tract of land; which were referred to the Committee on Private Land Claims.

Mr. King presented the memorial of John Wood and others, masters of wrecking vessels along the coast of Florida, remonstrating against the establishment of a port of entry at Indian Key; which was referred to the Committee on Commerce, and ordered to be printed.

Mr. Young submitted documents in relation to internal improvements in the State of Illinois.

Ordered, That they be printed, and that three hundred copies, in addition to the usual number, be printed for the use of the Senate.

Mr. Benton presented the memorial of Thomas Coyle, praying the appointment of a competent person to examine into the merits of an hydraulic cement, of which he is the inventor and patentee; which was referred to the Committee on Patents and the Patent Office.

Mr. Benton submitted a document in relation to the claims of Joseph Mendenhall and others, settlers on the public lands in the State of Indiana, to the right of pre-emption; which was referred to the Committee on Public Lands, and ordered to be printed.

On motion by Mr. Smith, of Connecticut,

Ordered, That the Committee on Revolutionary Claims be discharged from the further consideration of the memorial of the representatives of

William Rumney; and from the further consideration of the petition of the widow of John L. De Van Brun.

Mr. Norvell, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom was referred the bill (H. R. 582) for the relief of Joseph R. Folsom, and the owners and crew of the schooner Galaxy, of Bucksport, in the State of Maine, reported it without amendment.

Mr. Lyon, from the Committee on Private Land Claims, to whom the petition of Joseph Campau was referred, submitted a report, accompanied by a bill (S. 302) for his relief. The bill was read, and passed to the second reading.

Mr. Lyon, from the Committee on Roads and Canals, to whom was referred the bill (H. R. 1134) to authorize the construction of certain improvements in the Territory of Wisconsin, and for other purposes, reported it without amendment.
