INTRODUCTION.

CHRISTIAN READER,

In taking up a new Work into your hands to peruse, doubtless the cogitations of your heart are busy upon its character, and you become anxious to acquaint yourself with the same; and, as the title of the said Work may indicate, more or less, that character of which you approve, and take an interest in, so your anxiousness is more or less apparent. If the title of the Work indicate its nature and character to be that in which you take delight, you give the book your earliest and most careful perusal, that you may judge for yourself as to whether it merits your approval, or is calculated to effect the designs of its Author, which, if it does, you then give it your confidence, perusing it with satisfaction and pleasure, and recommending it at all opportunities to others whom you may judge are similarly delighted as yourself with the subjects of which it treats, nor think its price high, nor the means you adopt to place it into their hands a trouble.

The Author of the Work now in your hands cannot but expect you will adopt a similar course in the present instance; you will either presently throw it aside as a Work not answering to its title nor the intentions of its Author, and so give it a place in the world's
