NINTH ANNUAL REPORT

OF THE

Ohio State

BOARD OF AGRICULTURE,

OF THE

STATE OF OHIO,

TO THE

GOVERNOR.

For the Year 1854.

COLUMBUS:

S. MEDARY, PRINTER.

1855.

[ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

In presenting this, the ninth Annual Report of the "Ohio State Board of Agriculture," to the farmers of Ohio, it has been the aim to furnish a " readable book," containing only useful matter, and this in the smallest possible space.

Literature," as now cultivated, aims to make a large book out of a small amount of material. This will do very well for that very numerous class whose "time" is not turned to good account, who read merely to gratify a vitiated taste, and not to acquire useful ideas.

But time is the principal stock in trade, with many of those for whom this volume is intended, and while we have kept sight of this fact, we have not lacked the stimulus of an overweening desire, on the part of the Legislature, and other authorities, to cut down a very useful branch of the State printing, to a limit far below what is awarded to other States, notwithstanding we occupy an enviable position, as an agricultural community. Our facilities are almost without limit in this most useful branch of human industry. We enjoy a large share of celebrity, throughout the civilized world, as a community devoted to husbandry, in the broadest sense,—we are not known as being engaged in any other avocation, to any considerable degree. We should, therefore, first of all things, cultivate and improve our " Agriculture."

The Reports of the several County Societies, will be found of especial interest, and the essays upon "Culture," "Stock breeding," "Hedging," &c., are of rare value, and to those who have furnished these papers, we are under lasting obligations.

G. SPRAGUE, Corresponding Secretary.

COLUMBUS, Feb. 10th, 1855.
