KENT JARVIS, 33.

KENT JARVIS was born in the small village of Fly Creek, near the village of Cooperstown, the county seat of Otsego Co., New York, on the 13th day of June, 1801.

Sir JARVIS has filled many important official positions both in Church and State, and in railroad and banking corporations, the duties of all which were discharged intelligently and with fidelity and honor; and he was ever distinguished for his private enterprise, public spirit, and liberal benefactions.

Sir JARVIS was initiated an Entered Apprentice, March 25th, 1823, and June following he was raised to the degree of Master Mason in Otsego Lodge, then No. 41, now No. 138, at Cooperstown, New York. In June, 1824, he was exalted to the degree of Royal Arch Mason, in Otsego Chapter, No. 26, at Cooperstown.

In the summer of 1828 he removed from Fly Creek to Lowville, Lewis Co., New York; and in the spring of 1841 to Fort Plain, Montgomery County, New York; and in March, 1844, to the now city of Massillon, Stark County, Ohio, where he resided at the time of his decease.

He soon affiliated with Clinton Lodge, No. 47, and Hiram Chapter, No. 18; and on December 25th, 1845, he was created a Knight Templar in Massillon Commandery, No. 4, of which Commandery he continued a member until the day of his decease.

He also passed through all the grades of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, receiving the grades of the Lodge, Council and Chapter in Cleveland, and the grades of the Consistory in Cincinnati. Having been elected by the Supreme Council, he received the grade of Sovereign Grand Inspector General of 33°, at the hands of E. T. Carson, 33°, (by special dispensation), and was thereby made an Honorary member of the Supreme Council for the N... Jurisdiction of the U. S. In all the long period from his initiation to the day of his decease, more than fifty-two years, he was an active, working Mason. During his Masonic life he filled every office in the Symbolic Lodge, from Junior Deacon to that of Master; in the Chapter, from R... A... Captain to High Priest; and in the Commandery, from Prelate to E.. Commander. In the G... Lodge of Ohio, he served from Junior Deacon to G.. Junior Warden; in the G.. Chapter of Ohio he was Deputy G.. High Priest from 1856 to 1858, when he declined an election of G.. H.. Priest; in 1848 he was G.. Generalissimo; in 1851 and 1858 Deputy G.. Commander; and from 1859 to 1863 inclusive, G.. Commander of the G.. Commandery of Knights Templar of Ohio; from

1865 to 1868 he was G.. Captain General; and from 1868 to 1871 Grand Generalissimo of the G.. Encampment of the U. S.; and at the time of his decease was Representative of the G.. Lodge of Texas, the G.. Council of Tennessee, and the G.. Commanderies of Knights Templar for the States of Wisconsin, New York, Georgia, New Jersey, Missouri and Vermont, near the G.. Bodies of corresponding rank and title of the State of Ohio, and was President of the Association of Masonic Veterans of Ohio; in all which positions he discharged the various duties with honor to himself and the Craft.

He was happy in all his domestic and social relations, and as a man, a Christian, a Mason, and citizen, he enjoyed the entire confidence and warm esteem of all who knew him.

Our venerable Brother and distinguished Knight was stricken by paralysis on the morning of Monday, the 15th day of January, 1877, and he died within a few minutes. His funeral took place on the following Thursday, the 18th of January. By special request of the family of the deceased, the funeral services were under the direction of Massillon Commandery; the service at the grave being conducted by R... E... Sir Knights Heman Ely, and E. T. Carson, Past Commanders of the G.. Commandery of Ohio. The Lodge and Chapter of which he was a member also joined in and took part in the ceremonies, and a very large number of old and distinguished Masons were present from all parts of the State. Our old friend and Brother has gone from us, and the places that knew him once shall know him no more forever, but

"Mortalitate relicta vivit immortalitate indutus.”
