CONSTITUTIONS OF 1867,

OF THE

ANCIENT ACCEPTED SCOTTISH RITE

FOR THE

NORTHERN MASONIC JURISDICTION OF THE UNITED STATES,

AS REVISED IN 1877.

THE SUPREME COUNCIL of the thirty-third degree of the ANCIENT ACCEPTED SCOTTISH RITE FOR THE NORTHERN MASONIC JURISDICTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, founded upon the Constitution of 1762, of 1786, and the secret constitutions of the Order, holds the sovereign power of governing itself and regulating all the degrees of the ANCIENT ACCEPTED SCOTTISH RITE within the Jurisdiction; of perpetuating the ritual and philosophy of the RITE in substantial accordance with the ancient landmarks of the RITE; of making all laws necessary for the good of the RITE, or affecting its interests or the relations of members thereto in any of its degrees, or the organization of the subordinate bodies of the RITE. It also holds the exclusive power of regulating the relations of this Jurisdiction to other independent Jurisdictions of the RITE.

In the exercise of these, its highest powers, it hereby ordains the following Constitutions.

Grand Orient.

ART. 1. The GRAND ORIENT of this Jurisdiction shall be at the vertical point under the zenith 42°, 21', 27" N. lat., 5°, 59', 18", E. long., meridian of Washington, (Boston, Mass.), from which place all

The Supreme COUNCIL of the thirty-third degree of the ANCIENT ACCEPTED SCOTTISH RITE FOR THE NORTHERN MASONIC JURISDICTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, founded upon the Constitution of 1762, of 1786, and the secret constitutions of the Order, holds the sovereign power of governing itself and regulating all the degrees of the ANCIENT ACCEPTED SCOTTISH RITE within the Jurisdiction; of perpetuating the ritual and philosophy of the RITE in substantial accordance with the ancient landmarks of the RITE; of making all laws necessary for the good of the RITE, or affecting its interests or the relations of members thereto in any of its degrees, or the organization of the subordinate bodies of the RITE. It also holds the exclusive power of regulating the relations of this Jurisdiction to other independent Jurisdictions of the RITE.

In the exercise of these, its highest powers, it hereby ordains the following Constitutions.

Grand Orient.

ART. 1. The GRAND ORIENT of this Jurisdiction shall be at the vertical point under the zenith 42°, 21', 27′′ N. lat., 5°, 59′, 18", E. long., meridian of Washington, (Boston, Mass.), from which place all

decrees, balustres, charters, diplomas, and all official documents shall bear date. The SUPREME COUNCIL shall meet annually; one annual meeting at least in every three years shall be held at the Grand Orient; but the meeting at which the first triennial election of officers shall take place after May, 1867, shall be held in the city of Cincinnati. Other annual meetings not otherwise provided for shall be held at such place as shall from time to time be determined by the SUPREME COUNCIL. Special meetings, called by the Sov.`. Gr.'. Commander, shall be held at such places as he shall direct. All other special meetings shall be held at the Grand Orient.

Number of Members.

ART. 2. This SUPREME COUNCIL now consists of fifty-seven active members, and may be increased to a number not exceeding sixty-six one of whom at least shall be from each State in this jurisdiction, and whenever a new State shall be formed or included within the Jurisdiction, it shall be entitled, of right, to one active member in the SUPREME COUNCIL.

Election of Sov.. Gr.. Ins.. Gen'l..

ART. 3. SOVEREIGN GRAND INSPECTORS GENERAL of the thirty third and last degree, Active members of the SUPREME COUNCIL ad vitam, shall be elected at the annual meetings of the Council by viva voce vote; three negative votes shall reject a candidate. Sovereign Grand Inspectors General of the thirty-third and last degree, Honorary Members of the SUPREME COUNCIL, shall be elected by a secret ballot, and a unanimous vote is necessary to their election.

Past Active Members.

ART. 4. I. Any Active Member who shall vacate his active membership by resignation, or removal into a State other than the one for which he was elected and to which he was accredited, or otherwise, shall thereby become a PAST ACTIVE MEMBER.

II. PAST ACTIVE MEMBERS have the right to be present at all sessions of the SUPREME COUNCIL, and to a voice therein, but no

vote.
